View Full Version : please rate this Faame....
Muaythaibike 02-18-2008, 05:14 AM Please be honest. It is Alum and I have paid 1000 for the bike. Please evaluate on two levels. 1) The quality of the frame for the price I paid for the bike. 2) The quality of the frame relative to other alum frames..
Here are the details...Scale of 1-10 would do. 1 terrible, 10 awesome

gregwjs 02-18-2008, 05:20 AM 9.5 It's 95% rider, 5% bike. Bike forums lament over the last 5%. If it fits you, it's perfect. Go ride it.
Muaythaibike 02-18-2008, 05:41 AM I take it that its not great? I just want to know how I did for my money. I was watching thos bike for the past 6 months.

just ride it and enjoy it and quit obsessing already
gregwjs 02-18-2008, 05:45 AM 9.5 out of 10 is great. Enjoy it.
Muaythaibike 02-18-2008, 05:50 AM come on guys I can take it...Betweent the eyes I dare you!!!!
rdolson 02-18-2008, 06:06 AM OK
Well, the 105 is a really well performing drivetrain, once dialed in properly (sounds like your LBS is missing the mark on that one) it should give you years of service if you give it a moderate amount of TLC.
HATE the wheels! The paired spokes are a fashion statement and will give you nothing but trouble down the road. Yes, there is a place for paired spokes, but on wheelsets costing more than what your whole bike cost. Future upgrade.
The brakes are probably Tekro, put a set of REAL brake pads on them, Koolstops or Jagwires.
Most importantly, how do YOU rate the bike?
Does it make you want to jump on it and ride? Do you think about all the fun times you had/will have on it exploring and getting fit while enjoying the great outdoors?
Is it a comfy fit that you can spend hours on? (Ditch the seat, btw, no stock seat is ever going to fit as well as one you pick out for your own a$$)
Dollar for dollar, Trek always offers great bang for the buck. As long as you yearn to hop on the saddle and ride, then it should be a "10" in anyones book.
come on guys I can take it...Betweent the eyes I dare you!!!!
Ok, it's a disaster waiting to happen -- very likely it will spontaneously combust, without warning.
Or not. The bike has a pretty good rep for value in a basic road bike. The frame is probably just fine. 105 works great. You shopped, and waited, and got it for a few hundred bucks off the list price. So now you have something that, if it fits, will ride like a road bike. Ride and enjoy.
Lifelover 02-18-2008, 06:18 AM It's a great Faame!
Lance was quoted as saying "While this years TDF (2004) was tough I could have easily won last years mountain stages on a POS like the Trek 1600."
Google it! You can find it.
uzziefly 02-18-2008, 06:56 AM You already posed questions on this bike sometime back and got many reviews and suggestions.
Then, you bought the bike and are sorta happy with it and still ask people to rate it?
Just ride yer bike for cryin out loud.
You already have it. So, just ride it.
BuenosAires 02-18-2008, 07:11 AM "They're all gonna laugh at you!"
gregwjs 02-18-2008, 07:12 AM Not if he drops them.
Lifelover 02-18-2008, 07:17 AM Not if he drops them.
At club rides they don't care how fast you are, just what you ride.
If he was on a Meivici going 14 MPH they would love him.
Chances are there will be some other Freds that don't really know anything about bikes and will think he is cool because he has a "Trek". They will talk to him.
He should have gotten a Le Champion:mad2:
Richard 02-18-2008, 07:18 AM For under a grand, the Trek 1600 is a very nice bike. It has a relatively "forgiving" ride for tig-welded, oversize aluminum. Just ride, wear out the components, and it's actually worth upgrading.
By the way, the Bontrager Selects are heavy (about 2000 grams) but our shop's experience has been that they are pretty bomb-proof.
gregwjs 02-18-2008, 07:23 AM The pain of being dropped by someone on an inadequate bike lasts a long time. I remember a guy hanging for 60+ miles on a 20+mph group ride while riding a 1992 Proflex full suspension mountainbike with slicks. He took pulls and everything. He suffered a little bit on the climbs but taking pulls at 25-28mph on the flats was no problem. I don't remember too many training rides from 1993, but that one sticks out. I consider it early empirical evidence leading to my understanding that it's 95% bike, 5% rider.
So I say go kick ass on your POS Trek. Yell out "It's just like Lance's" as you launch your mighty attack off the front...

what club do you ride with??? in may places if he rides 14mph on a meivici, he would get laughed out of the parking lot. chances are there will be some that know a lot about bikes and will think he's not cool because he has a trek (and won't talk to him). OTOH, if he's a n00b the trek is perfectly fine and acceptable... once he refines his bike palate (and abilities) he may himself think it's not cool to ride a trek or may not care at all. there's a saying "plenty wagon, no horse"... you don't want to be that guy
Muaythaibike 02-18-2008, 08:00 AM You guys are awesome. I am very happy with my new ride. I just have to get my LBS to step up. Another problem I noticed is that the tape directly behind the shifter on the right is cut. Looks like an over aggressive brake application that caused the shifter to slice the tape. what shpuld I as my LBS to do. Rewrap the whole thing or just place a patch. I rode the bike once so I dont think I did it....
Bike club? I want to join one. I think they have A B and C rides. I'm a 37 year old in good cardio shape so I think I can hang with the B boys. I think the C group rides 20 miles at abou 14-16. The B faster.
gregwjs 02-18-2008, 08:04 AM Replace crappy bontrager tape with some fizik or some specialized with bar gel. Your hands will be comfy.
Hop on the b ride, take plenty of water a couple of clif bars and your cell phone. Be prepared to ride home alone. Try not to.
Muaythaibike 02-18-2008, 08:44 AM Bontrager wheel set and tires... Crapy or bombproof? I am hearing both opinions..
So do I have a stance to have my LBS replace the tape at no charge?
Ride home alone?? Dont clubs have no one left behind rules?
I live on Boston's south shore. Does anybody have any clubs that they can recommend? Specifically, Canton mass area..
Thanks you all... Just wish I started this sport while i was in my 20's. I probally would be posting about a 5K bike at this point....
buck-50 02-18-2008, 08:56 AM Bontrager wheel set and tires... Crapy or bombproof? I am hearing both opinions..
Crappy, as in, they weigh more than more expensive wheels.
Bombproof, as in, they're built to last, not to be light.
They will last you forever. They just won't be as light as wheels that cost twice as much.
Quit obsessing. it's just a bike. get out and ride. If anyone makes fun of you, stick a pump in their spokes.
gowencm 02-18-2008, 09:03 AM A pair of bontrager selects came on my (entry-level) road bike that is very similar in setup to this one. They are relatively heavy, but after a solid 5 years with this as my only ride for rec. and commuter riding in all weather, I feel comfortable saying that they are very solid wheels. They hold up to all but the most vicious potholes (i'm 165lb) without going out of true. Maybe crappy for racing, which I don't do anyway, but in the meantime you can think of it as added resistance training.
blackhat 02-18-2008, 09:31 AM bike's fine, so is the faame. that of course is conditional on you not having teh below sticker on your bumper. <br>

Muaythaibike 02-18-2008, 09:40 AM Ok, no more obsessing... Rain stoped, going out for 20.... Any other feedback is appreciated....
Kuma601 02-18-2008, 10:07 AM Just ride it and enjoy. Now if it came stock with A/C, rain sensing wipers, active HID lighting and a crash safety rating...:p
barry1021 02-18-2008, 01:31 PM Ok, no more obsessing... Rain stoped, going out for 20.... Any other feedback is appreciated....
One more, don't worry about the bar tape, I didn't look at the pix, but get a similar color piece of electrical tape and that will hold you for a long time. When the bar tape needs replacing, buy some and do it yourself. THe more you learn, the more you will enjoy your rides, because you will be self sufficient-the 1600 is a very nice ride--when I started riding I started with a 1000. Rented a 1600 on vacation and realized it was time to move up, and so I did--just not to Trek, LOL.
Enjoy, ride that sucker into the ground.

innergel 02-19-2008, 06:38 AM My 2001 Trek2300 has an Alpha SLR aluminum frame with a road-carving carbon fork too. It's plenty light and I've never had a problem with it. It's stiff and a little harsh. I've put 3000-5000 miles a year on it every year since I bought it new. I would say this frame and fork is the equivalent of my frame. Nothing fancy, but a very solid rideable frame.
You did good.
99trek5200 02-19-2008, 06:56 AM The distain for Treks is amusing. I liken them to a Toyota. They are abundant, not flashy and run and run and run.
The 1600 is a fine bike. Ride and enjoy.
Mr. Versatile 02-19-2008, 04:51 PM I think it was a good deal. I don't like the paired spokes, and I hate aluminum frames. But that's just for me. I think you did well with this purchase.
Barry is right. Learn to tape your own bars. It's shockingly easy. It's about as hard as lacing up a new pair of running shoes. Buy some tape and try it. Personally, I like Deda, Cinelli, or Performance cork. Do a search here on how to tape bars.
Nice bike - good price.
sir duke 02-19-2008, 05:23 PM A Trek on the road is worth 2 Colnagos in the garage. Unless, of course, you are Terry B. He lives by rules us mere mortals can only dream about.:)
Tri Slow Poke 02-20-2008, 03:44 AM Ok, no more obsessing... Rain stoped, going out for 20.... Any other feedback is appreciated....
You bought a fine bike. I have a Trek 1000 and often think about "upgrading". I shown up at a local bike shop with it for their weekly group rides and they always give me the sales pitch.........until I drop them. That seems to shut them up until the next week.
Ride it and ejoy it!
yankeesuperfan 02-20-2008, 01:42 PM I'd say you did pretty good for the money
