Just out of curiosity. Because we will be there the last two weeks of July. With MTBs. And road bikes. I know there are lots of bike trails all over the area. And dirt trails of course. Local knowledge appreciated.

Anyone want to swing by? We'll have space if you want to hang out and or crash. 2 queen beds in the spare room, and a fold out couch, and lots of floor.

I'm not saying the "G" word. I'm just saying.

Frisco is great. Close to Breck and Copper. There is a great trail from Frisco to Breck you have to take...all paved. It also goes up the canyon to Copper or you could do Vail. Also tons of MTB if that floats your boat. I'll let the real Frisco locals chime in for actual recommends, but here's something I found in a tourist brochure

A SAMPLING OF RIDES AROUND THE AREA:
Paved Roads and Paths
1. Ride around the lake - 17 miles - moderate. A scenic ride on the
bike paths and roads featuring all types of terrain.
2. Frisco to Copper Mountain - 15 miles round trip - easy. A scenic
ride along Ten Mile Creek on the bike path.
3. Frisco to Breckenridge - 20 miles round trip - easy. A pleasant ride
through the Arapaho National Forest near Frisco and then along the
Blue River.
4. Frisco to Vail - 50 miles round trip - difficult. A challenging ride
over Vail Pass with outstanding scenery. Entirely on the bike path.
5. Quadre Loupe - 100 miles - difficult. A very challenging ride
through Vail, Minturn, Leadville and back to Frisco. Follows the route
of the Coors Classic 1986-1988 course.
Mountain Bikes
1. Peaks Trail - 20 miles round trip - moderate. An outstanding
rolling trail featuring challenging climbs and breathtaking descents
through the forest.
2. Miner's Creek area - many fire roads and singletrack trails in this
region provide countless choices.
3. Tiger Road area - trails and roads lead above timberline to great
views of the Swan River Valley and historic mining sites

That's what I meant by local knowledge! I needs me some good mexican food when I go out west.

Shoot, I can figure out where to ride my bikes, folks. Food, booze, hookers, that's what I need to know about!

(cycling knowledge appreciated, really)

You can throw a stick and get good MX food out here though. Getting good sushi in CO...now that's an art.

Here is a rather long post I did last summer that covers the Frisco, Dillon, Silverthorne area, as well as other places. I only road some of the paved MUT around the lake, but it's beautiful. Don't miss the PI outlet in Silverthorne. And if you need any auto work, I can recommend a good shop.

I lived there in '88 and '89. I wasn't into biking then, so I can't help you. But daaayyyuummm I love that town and that area. I lived off 4th and Main, Creekside Drive. Man, I miss that place and that part of my life.

If you noticed, I just put my dog, Frisco, down a few weeks ago. Yes, he was named for the town.

Nothing to add. It just made me nostalgic for some really good times in my life.

We will be up doing the Colordaod Eagle River Ride on the 26th. It's not the most challenging ride in Colorado, but we've done it for years. It's just over the pass.
http://denver.yourhub.com/Denver/Events/Fundraising/Event~431082.aspx

BJ is right, Good mexican food is really easy to find. If it's not good it doesn't stick around very long . To that end we end up spending more time over in Silverthorne (on the other side of the lake) In fact, we'll be up there this weekend for a couple parties and some skiing.

Over in Silverthone, a classic is the ODI - Old Dillon Inn. They have good margaritas and mexican food that hasn't changed in the last 20 years. Good bar, and local music on the weekends. And the guys with the cowboy hats at the bar really work the ranches down the valley.

I'll be up there with the locals this weekend. I'll check and see what they would recommend for good places to eat. Finding a good ride isn't too hard around there. Pick a pass and go climbing. Avoide the bike paths on the weekend - they are covered with tourists that are looking at the scenery instead of where they are going.

Have you ever ridden Fruita? That's some good trail riding there.Fruita is fun. We usually stop and do Mary's/Horsetheif loops on our way to Moab. It's not very challenging, but since we only bring out the dirt bikes once or twice a year, it's good practice and warmup before heading onto the fun stuff.

there is a good race not too far off from Frisco. In Salida, an omnium
never done the crit or TT but the RR is killer. lots of climbing and fast safe descents.
several laps on the close road course.
also near Salida is the Monarch Crest Trail. It's MTB style but epic. ridding on the divide. Gotta do this early AM in July for sure. (afternoon t-storms can kill you on the Divide as you're a great lighting rod)

Yeah, nothing fun in fruita!

Actually, it's been 10 years since I rode there. If I am in CO in high summer, I want alpine riding. But the locals, well, they can show you some stuff that might open your eyes to what is there. Ask at the shop, get the book. The views don't match moab, but the singletrack is.... sweet.

Fruita is very good riding, but quite a ways away from Frisco. There's a lot of good trails cloder to Frisco. Breckenridge (nearby) is really selling itself as a cross country mountain bike resort area, unlike the other ski resorts, which are much more downhill oriented.

My suggestion is take the mounain bikes "off the beaten path" by drivin a ways onto some forest service dirt roads. Not really technical mountain bike riding, but gorgeous and a "Colroado" like experience.

We will be up doing the Colordaod Eagle River Ride on the 26th.

We'll be leaving the 26th. But, if you want an easy ride on the 25th, maybe we can do something. Given history, after two weeks our legs will be completely dead by then. So REAL easy. Not crazy cyclist "I have not been training and I've had pneumonia, and my bike is acting up, and so don't worry if I go OTB wink wink" easy.

There is also a fun little open bar over at the Dillon Marina on the other side of the lake. It's kind of just a little shack with some chairs and tables out overlooking the docks. Great place to enjoy the afternoon sun and have a few drinks and eats while waiting for the sun to set. Not even close to being fancy, but beautiful scenery.

Not crazy cyclist "I have not been training and I've had pneumonia, and my bike is acting up, and so don't worry if I go OTB wink wink" easy.We might be able to make that happen. Last year we went up a day early and cruised the bike path up to Breck and back just to get the legs moving. I definitely wouldn't mind heading up a day early and doing an easy ride. Pretty much what we do on these trips is MTB, and try to keep the road rides to recovery pace and minimal vertical. Being flatlanders, we want the most fun for the climbs, and that means trail.

One of the reasons we pick the places we do is so we can ride from our door, no need to drive. When we go to Tahoe, our place is on the Rim Trail, for example. Frisco looks like a good place for doing that.

How about we ride the bike path up and the trail down? "Most fun for the climbs" = "most fun PAYOFF for the climbs".

My wife would kill me if I suggested a paved downhill when dirt is available. Literally. She would assume I was insane and should be put out of my misery.

Hoo - you need to shuttle the Commando Run near Vail. It's tres chic.

from mtbr:

From the top of Vail Pass Head up Shrine Pass road past the Shrine Past Lodge to your first right intersection. Follow this gravel road to the first trail head. This is Commando Run, the same trail the 10th Mtn Division trained on. Ride this puppy all the way to the intersection with Two-Elk trail and decide between the following. Take Two-Elk West into Minturn 12 miles from intersection. Take Two-Elk East back down to I-70 about 2,700 vertical in 2.7 miles! Or, Climb up Bench Mark and decend down Mill Creek road to the town of Vail (double track hyperspace) Finally, you've got the option of going to China and then climbing back out and riding out through Vail Mtn. This is an excellent trail good from July to early September. If you do the Minturn loop back to Vail and assuming you used Vail as a starting point, you're looking at nearly 50 miles. Try starting from the top of Vail Pass and you still get around 3,000 vertical. Start from Vail and you get around 6,000 vertical. Only Thor, God of Thunder can hang under those circumstances. No Heidi's please.

Yeah, I just wasn't sure how familiar you are with the area, I've had some people ask me if I cruise down to Durango to ride, which is about 8 hours away from my house.

Look into the Argentine Pass area, which is double track (I think) but it gets up there arnd should have killer views. Also, the Colorado Trail from Breck to Kenosha Pass (to the east) is supposed to be spectacular.

Let us know when your in the area, maybe I'll br cruising the trails on my 29er in the area.

If we ride an hour from our house, we can find a 200' vertical stretch of road. When we do our trip in June, 1000-2000' total trail rides are about all we can handle in a day. Hopefully the extra month will let us get to double that this time around.

Butterhorn Bakery is a good breakfast stop
Never been too impressed with Backcountry Brewery
I do like Dillon Dam Brewery
Snake River Saloon, up the road from Keystone has good steaks
There's an Irish Pub called the Cala Inn just off of Dillon side of Swan Mtn Rd
Fruita is a bit of a drive
Copper Triangle (Copper to Leadville to Minturn to Vail to Copper) is a good 85-ish miles road ride.
Riding over to Vail is fun, heading west over the pass is a lot easier that heading east from Vail, avoid on weekends.
The only MTB I've done up that way was at a trailhead a few miles up Montezuma Rd past Keystone, jeep trail, but still fun
There's a guide book to Summit County Road and MTB rides that's available free at most ski/bike shops up there. I'll see if I can find one when I'm up that way this weekend.
Keystone is pretty dead thru the summer
Breckenridge is always somewhat busy
go to www.snow.com to see if there are any events/festivals/concerts at Keystone/Breck/A-basin/Vail/Beaver Creek
Tons of great hiking
Never been too impressed with the PI outlet store
Stop by the Christy Sports Outlet in Frisco for good offseason deals on ski stuff

Oh yeah, afternoon showers, get off of any high passes or ridges by noon.

Running out of ideas. I have a friend with a house near Keystone, I may be able to meet up with you at some point during your stay. Post again closer to your trip. Have a great time

Riding back from Vail Pass is a gas. Speed limits for bikes are posted on the turns. The ride back from Montezuma is fun too.

We cooked in mostly, but had a really nice experience at the brewpub. Nachos and beers … lots of beers. Their porter is pretty good.
There are a lot of fun little restaurants in Breckenridge.
