View Full Version : NJ Gov McGreevey comes out of the closet
HouseMoney 08-12-2004, 12:35 PM Wow! Admitted an adult consentual affair with another man, too. Resigned his governorship effective Nov 15th! He's married and has a young child. He's also been under fire lately with some ethics charges.
I have to give him credit for his public press conference. Though I didn't agree with his politics, I wish him well.
The NJ Senate President (next in line), Richard Codey, is also a Dem. Rats!

Why give him credit? He appointed his lover to the position of NJ Homeland Security Director at $110,00/year, a position he wasn't qualified to hold. (couldn't even get security clearance from the Federal Gov) The Taxpayers had to pay for an unqualified appointee just so he could give his lover a job! Not only that, but arguably the security of the state was compromised for mcgreavy personal reasons. Add this to the ethics charges and the stories of the sexual harrasment suit, (some are even saying criminal charges may follow) and I don't wish him well.
He is even trying to time his resignation to deprive the voters of electing a new gov. this year. F him
HouseMoney 08-12-2004, 02:15 PM I don't know. The McGreevey resignation is being reported on Newsmax. So despite having listened to his press conference live, I guess this means it really didn't happen.
Gore won NJ comfortably in '00. Kerry's lead is around 2-4%. Since McG is conveniently waiting until after the election to step down, I wonder how that will play out. I'm guessing there'll be a political backlash, which can't make Kerry too happy. Joisey is back in play!
thatsmybush 08-12-2004, 03:56 PM In a great game of you think you can destroy your political career well you ain't seen anything yet looky what I can do. The governor of New Jersey jumps from the closet on national television. Jack and Jeri Ryan's 15 minutes are officially over.
You just know how divided we are as a country when one party has to out do the others sex scandals.
MR_GRUMPY 08-12-2004, 05:18 PM I'm sure that his wife is very happy that her husband turns out to swing both ways. I'm not sure if he should resign. After all, can you think of any other elected official who has resigned over an affair.
His wife should kick him out and make his sleep in the official governor's garage until he can be voted out of office.
HouseMoney 08-13-2004, 05:02 AM ... I'm not sure if he should resign. ...
There's more to this story than meets the eye. I was a little disappointed in last night's news and talking-heads-show coverage since they all seemed to make the point that his resignation was because he was gay. That's not the case, and as a (somewhat conservative) NJ resident myself, that fact is irrelevant as it relates to his qualifications to serve.
There have been numerous scandals (some of) which allegedly involved McG, dating back to his time as mayor of Woodbridge (small, blue collar community). The hiring of his lover, Golan Cipel, an unqualified Israeli national a few years ago to be the NJ Homeland Security Director at a salary of $110k was only the tip of the iceberg. Cipel couldn't even get US security clearance, so he was moved to various other lobbying positions, assisted by cronies of McG, all the while earning the same salary. A key fundraiser (I like the film clips of Kushner in the company of Terry McAuliffe and Nancy Pelosi) has been indicted on blackmail charges. In order to silence an ally (his brother-in-law), Kushner paid for a hooker to have sex with his b-i-l and he videotaped it. Misappropriation of funds in the state purchase of farmland was another charge since the purchase price of the farm was doubled after McG became involved. And then there was the "Machiavelli" sting operation, where McG was heard on tape using this code word. Of course, McG said he was just mentioning the subject of a book he was reading at the time. Many of these scandals are coming to a head now. His popularity rating was a bottom-feeding 38% (and dropping), and he risked being voted out of office anyway.
No, coming out of the closet may have been difficult for ol' James; probably even harder for his wife, Dina, to listen to. That, and marital infidelity, are not reasons enough to step down. But I stick to my initial point that he did the honorable thing by stepping down, unlike a multitude of other politicians.

Not sure about the "honorable" part I would say he did the "I got caught and need to be humble" speech. He did the same thing as a myriad of other celebrities and politicians do when they risk being caught. Was Kobe going to tell his wife? Nope. Was Bill going to tell Hillary? Ah no I don't think so. Was Rush going to let us no about his addiction? Not in this life time.
Sounds to me that it was all about to hit the fan. The lies, blackmail rumors, the lover, the jobs giving the states homeland security in the capable hands of someone that knows nothing about the homeland or its security. He did the political expediant thing maybe he can get a talk show like Scarborough.

Your right, he just want's people to think and talk about the fact "He's Gay", instead of "He's corrupt". Judging from most of the reaction, he has been somewhat successful, but then again, most people are stupid and easily fooled.
dr hoo 08-13-2004, 06:44 AM ...was that I found out more about the situation HERE right after news broke than I did from the news all of last night. And that is a very sad state of affairs indeed.
