View Full Version : Question on Shoe Size
strohman 03-16-2008, 05:26 AM I started riding about 3 years ago and I'm primarily a recreational rider. I try to ride consistently in the Spring and Summer for the exercise and the pleasure of the ride.
I purchased my first pair of shoes 3 years ago--Specialilzed Comp. My LBS only carries a small supply of Specialized shoes, so that was the only shoe that I could try on. I wear a 42 in Specialized, which they say equals a size 9 in US. Many other manufacturers say that size 42 is a size 8.5 in US sizes.
I'm thinking about trying a different shoe now, but I'm not sure about the sizing. I was happy with the Specialized shoe overall, but I have been hearing great things about other shoes, especially Sidi.
I know that Sidi shoes also come in wide sizes, which is a different model. I do have a wide foot in the front, but had no problem with the Specialized shoe.
Can anyone tell me anything about the sizing of Sidi shoes? (Especially compared to Specialized shoes, or basic US shoe sizes.)
Thanks for any input!

Go to somewhere where they have the shoes you want, try them on for fit. Everyone's foot is different, as I'm sure that you're aware. We can't specify how things fit for you, you have to evaluate yourself.
That being said, I have had many pairs of cycling shoes over the years, and the ones that were the MOST comfortable ever were my Sidis.
There's no harm in trying new shoes, but you have to try them on to know what's what. If that's hard to do, there's a lot to be said for sticking with what works, and in shoes, that means what works for YOU. If specialized fits, and you'd like to get something new, get something new from specialized -- they have mid-end shoes, high-end shoes, etc. If the shoe fits ...
Some online catalogs have more specific conversion charts. I wear an 8.5 in just about any athletic or street shoe I've ever bought. I've never owned a 9. I have feet with a D width and wear 42.5 Sidi shoes. I you wear a 9 in most shoes, you'll need probably need a 43.
I've been looking at several brands of shoes and measuring my feet with a printed size chart. My feet are a both 10 inches long and 4 to 4.1 inches wide at the widest point. I got a real odd number from Rocket 7's chart (only 40.5). I called them and was told that they will soon have outlines of their 200 different sizes that can be printed for a more accurate comparison.
As others have noted, the best thing to do is try some on at a store, but that's not always easy.
LookDave 03-16-2008, 07:34 AM As noted above, pay attention to specific sizing for each shoe company you're interested in, there's some real difference from company to company. Example - I wear a size 12 street shoe, size 47 Sidi cycling shoe, and size 45 Northwave cycliing shoe. Latter is my personal favorite for my wide (D/E) foot, by the way, Tried on but never rode Shimanos once upon a time, if I remember correctly 46.5 fit me best.
Depending on how wide your foot is, you may very well prefer Sidi's "Mega" sizing to their regular sizing, which is too narrow for me.
+1 on try on if you possibly can. If you live in/near an area with several cycling shops, you should be able to find a place to try on Sidis. Lots of shops carry them, as they're very popular (deservedly so - they're great shoes) and sell quite well.
Dinosaur 03-16-2008, 10:09 AM It's best to try on the model you want to buy. Or buy online from someone who has a good exchange policy. Fitting is different, even between models with the same manufacturer, I've found. It's a hassle to exchange (and time consuming), so if you have to travel to find a shop who has a good selection of shoes, it's worth it.
saccycling 03-16-2008, 02:52 PM I bought 2 pair of cannondale shoes from performance. I had them shipped to store, to save on shipping charges. When I went to pick up my shoes. I tried both of them on at the store and took home the shoes that fit best. With a immediate return on the other pair of shoes.

Mr. Versatile 03-17-2008, 05:49 PM Go to an LBS & try'em on. It's the only way to tell.
