There seems to be some dispute asw to just what the video contained. If it was a celebration of his life it would probably be acceptable but if it was a celebration of his homosexuality, it would not have fit in a church that is opposed to that life style. They probably should have turned the family down initially.

Look, you'll get no bigger supporter of Gay rights than me, but the church was completely within it's rights to do what it did, and they'd be hypocrites if they didn't.
Like it or not, there's a pretty specific rule against homosexuality in the Bible. And while this should in no way shape or form influence PUBLIC policy, it would be hypocritical of us on the left to demand that it not be allowed to influence PRIVATE policy.
The High Point Church can do what they like, no matter how callous it might seem.
And, calling a 5,000 member church a "megachurch" is a pretty big stretch.
JoeDaddio 03-24-2008, 07:51 AM Shouldn't they be murdering all the gays and lesbians then? After all, it's in the bible.

It's illegal to kill people. It's not illegal to be a douchebag. Thus, the High Point Church can engage in all manner of douchebaggery and never cross the law.
bigbill 03-24-2008, 08:14 AM If we had a proper state sponsored religion, this kind of stuff wouldn't happen. Maybe it is time for separation of church and state to be looked at again.

Since when has the law of man meant more than the law of God Himself?

since we live in a secular society?

Or even better, if we are considering separation of anything, we should consider separating the state of Texas from the union.

Funny thing- that's in the Bible, too- "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.” Jesus didn't think you could get out of paying your taxes just because yer government is full of heathens...
Otherwise, since the First Amendment, I guess.

what are you implying? don't waste too many posts...
are you saying the state should force the church to change it's precepts according to society's trends? that's a transgression of freedom of religion. not cool in a democracy.
evryone is free to leave wjatever lifestyle and relationships in the open but should not expect the church to rewrite the bible.
it's a secular society... just live w/out religion.

I don't know... I suppose I was just pointing out how ridiculous a lot of the bible can be. And how people can hold to it so tightly... but only particular parts... and continently ignore other parts?
I have a terrible sinus headache right now though, and am in a generally agitated mood, so I suppose I'm just spouting off.

bahueh 03-24-2008, 09:56 AM NNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
I thought this stuff was expected in Texas...steers and queers and all that...
its not exactly a bastion of openmindedness and acceptance of all human beings...
kiwisimon 03-24-2008, 02:02 PM odd that homosexuality is forbidden and actively campaigned against by many of the same people who support state executions which directly counters the commandment given by God to Moses "Thou shalt not kill" and oddly enough Texas leads the ststes in state sanctioned killings. Something smells down there. No wonder so many Mexicans move North given the prevailing winds are Northerlies.

You'd be well advised to commit your crimes in a more enlightened State. We won't mind at all, .......... y'all. :)

Apparently this Texan agrees with you...sort of:

You're right up till this statement. A megachurch to me is anything with anything over say, 500 members. 5,0000 is a lot of people.
kiwisimon 03-24-2008, 10:54 PM ... and so did the catholic inquisition. killing is not a texan privilege is it?
not in the twenty first century? But you're right, it's not a Texan priviledge.

I dunno, the catholic church I attended as a kid had well over 5000 parishioners. Doesn't mean they all showed up at once- I never saw more than 5-600 at a time... and on a non holiday? what, 200, tops? I know it didn't take too much time to pass the collection plate.
There's a big difference between 5000 members and 5000 filled seats.
