View Full Version : Good wheelset for around $500
robbyracer 04-01-2008, 09:03 AM Hi all. I'm in the market for a new wheelset for my C'dale Synapse 7. I have the fit dialed in and I'd like to shed a little rotating mass.
I've been stuck looking at Mavic Ksrilium Elites but there has to be something else that's comparable out there. My Synapse came with Maddux RX 2.1 wheels and hubs which are decent but if I can find a better option then the stock wheels will become trainer/rain wheels.
Thanks :)

System 30 or 30x if you are heavy or possibly 19 if you are really light.
Also look at Neuvations and Rol wheels. All 3 brands are great values, especially Neuvation.
robbyracer 04-01-2008, 10:16 AM Thanks dekindy. I'll go check out the System 30 and the others you posted.
BTW I'm kinda heavy, 6'5" @ ~230lbs so that will be a factor.
superflychief 04-01-2008, 11:02 AM Check out the Easton Circuit/EA 70's. The circuits have been replaced the by EA70's. It's a fantastic wheel that's actually lighter then the Mavic Ksyrium Elite but is bombproof. The reviews on the circuits are fantastic and the EA70 is identical. Check out the reviews on here. Oh and coincidentally I have a 2nd pair of EA70's that I'm trying to sell and I'd give you a great price on them. PM me if interested
MarvinK 04-01-2008, 11:59 AM Too bad you didn't ask a week ago... JensonUSA had Easton Ascent II wheels for $399. Pretty hard to beat at that price... keep an eye on their site to see if they show back up.
robbyracer 04-01-2008, 12:03 PM The Neuvations seem like a good set and the company is located right here in SLO. Maybe they'll let me try a set before I buy them. I like the fact that they're right here in case anything goes wrong with them.

Thanks :)Get some hand built wheels sutited for your weight and style. Usally better than pre-built.
But Mavic K's and Neuvations will serve you as well.
colorado cyclist will build you a set if you don't have a local guy to do it
dekindy 04-03-2008, 04:30 AM The Williams System 30x would be the best choice of the three with a 225 lb rider limit.
Colorado Cyclist would be a great choice. I would go with Ultegra hubs and the CXP-33 or Open Pro build, 32 spoke front and rear. If you want DT Swiss, I would recommend the RR 1.1 double eyelet or 1.2 on the rear and 1.1 on the front, 32-hole. The two Mavic options are around $260. You do not have to pay a lot for good wheels.
I would also recommend calling Dave Thomas at Speeddream Wheels. He might be slightly over your budget. He could probably give you a more comfortable riding wheel. He might recommend Velocity Aerohead O/C. The O/C stands for off-center. This design has less dish on the rear wheel and is much stronger than a wheel that is not off-center. Velocity Deep V's might not be strong enough for you.
If I were you I would contact Colorado Cyclist and get their recommendation. They would probably recommend the CXP-33.
dekindy 04-03-2008, 04:43 AM Easton makes good wheels. The EC70 with the 24/28 spoke count would be the only one that I would consider for you. I would call Easton about weight limits. There other wheels may be stronger than I think.
I believe the T3 technology is much harder to work with than a Mavic, DT Swiss or Velocity conventional spoked wheel.
dekindy 04-03-2008, 04:45 AM BTW - I purchased the Speeddream AR-20, Velocity O/C with White Industry hubs used on E-bay. The guy happened to live up the interstate so I was confident they were okay. Very nice riding wheel. The White Industries hubs are nice but noisy. I would probalby specify Ultegra or DT Swiss hubs if I were having them built new. Much quieter.
I weigh 220, so I'm bigger too. As a semi-converted mountain biker, I favor strength over weight reduction when it comes to wheels. I recently got some 32-hole (f and r) Mavic Open Pros laced on DA hubs built by Colorado Cyclist. With tires, tubes, and tape, the wheels ran right about $500. Very solid, plenty light, no frills wheelset.
Also, you can definitely tell a difference with the custom built wheelsets. After a few long, hard rides on some rougher back roads, they still feel rock solid. In my experience, the pre-built sets already start feeling a little noodly after a few hundred miles.

Yeah no kidding, huh?
I think I may take a trip over to Neuvation to see what they have since they're a local company and all.
