My nice Zipp 303 tubulars -- I've had these since late 2005, but really only have used them to race. Continental Competition tubies with Continental glue. I've had the same tires on the rim for two years. I replaced the worn rear maybe a month ago, and ridden them, I don't know, 100-150 miles since. Flatted on Sunday.
When I peeled off the tire to replace it, I found to my horror that in several places the bed of the carbon rim had delaminated and stuck to the tire. Near the stem, enough of the carbon came up that you can see into the core of the rim structure.
Zipp says to send them back, and they have a crash replacement price. I suppose maybe they'll even decide to warrant them.
I guess the bed of the rim isn't really structural, but, still. Is this going to happen again? What caused it to happen in the first instance? Zipp obviously has heard of it; the first thing that they asked me is whether I used 3M tape. Nope. Conti glue, which isn't even the stickiest.
