I'll be vacationing in Flamouth next week, and am considering taking the roadie with me. But am looking for any nice recommended areas/routes good for cycling- the main routes (Rt. 28 & 6?)are something I'd like to stay away from if at all possible; they stay busy in summer months.

Maybe even a local bike shop where I could get some maps or ideas for routes?

Thanks.

Don't know where you are, but go to BikeMaps.com - Rubel Bike Maps are fantastic and they have a waterproof one of the Cape. You can get one in probably any bike shop there and likely even in grocery stores etc. Go to Four Seas ice cream in Centerville - it is the best of the best.
The nicest areas to ride in (in my opinion) are up near Wellfleet and Truro, but there's lots of options.'

Rt 6 A is pretty and historic up around Dennis but it is pretty narrow and winding so I don't really recommend it.

Two of the best shops on the Cape are in Falmouth. Bike Zone is on Route 28, right next to McDonald's 273 Teaticket Hwy East Falmouth, MA 02536 508-540-BIKE

Corner Cycle: 115 Palmer Av.,
Falmouth; 540-4195

There are some great rides in the Falmouth area. Avoid Route 28 like the plague. 6A along the northside of the Cape may look attractive but isn't. A nice service road parallels the south side of Route 6 from Rte 130 in Sandwich into Hyannis.

One of my favorites is a 40 mile loop from Cotuit (my home), down Old Barnstable, Carriage Shop, Thomas Landers, 28A, into Woods Hole, around Nobska Light, around Falmouth Harbor, east along the beach, up Menauhant Ave., 28 for a couple miles, Metoxit, Ostrom, Red Harbor, New Seabury and home.

Another great ride is north on 28A, onto Old County or shore road to the Cape Cod Canal, onto the canal MUT to Sandwich, through Sandwich to Route 130, through Mashpee, and back into Falmouth via Old Barnstable, Carriage Shop, etc.

Mapquest away, you'll figure things out.

The LBSs will fill you in on the good rides. ping me for more suggestions. One ride I'm thinking of doing, but have not, is Cotuit to Woods Hole, Ferry to Martha's Vineyard, circumnavigation of the island, then back to Woods Hole and home.
