***Help talk me out of getting. I have a great road bike, a classic steel Marinoni, yes old!, along with a Raleigh M-80 (disc brakes)
mtn bike for nasty rides, (rain & snow, mud) or serious hills. (Palisades, NJ)

But I am obsessed with the whole look of fix bikes, it is the only bike I even
notice (forget those carbon fiber things from another planet).

Anyone have a low priced fix I could buy as a starter, better as a flip/flop.
About $400 maybe?

In the New York City area. I am in Brooklyn.

>>>>And, what's the story about getting bad knee problems? That's already
an issue for me to avoid overloading. I can no longer spend much time
standing on the pedals.

Thanks

Gener

Come on it's only four hundred dollars and if you hate it sell it, someone will buy it.

Buy something like this

http://bikesdirect.com/products/mercier/kilott.htm

It's only 350 shipped!

Of course there is always Craigslist.

As for knee problems, I think moderation is the key here. Pick a gear you are comfortable with and learn to anticipate problems in traffic before they happen.

the look? that is what you are obsessed with? if that's the case, maybe something from mission bicycles is for you.

Build a bike around a Shimano Nexxus 8-speed hub. You get the simple single-speed look you are after with the gearing your knees need. There's a bike built like that around here somewhere, shifted with a single downtube shift lever. It's very beautifully done.
