View Full Version : Jean-Claude Van Damme Appreciation Thread
filtersweep 04-13-2008, 10:43 AM Not really, folks. Our little one was awake last night, so I ventured upstairs to help him back to sleep, and flipped on late night TV. "Double Team" the JCVD classic was on. Van Damme's acting was terrific--- when compared to his costar: Dennis Rodman. It just keeps getting better, even Micky Rourke was in this cinematic masterpiece.
Seriously, is there any way to appreciate Van Damme? This guy always has to "star" in his movies--- at least someone like Steven Seagal can take a role in Executive decision and end up dead right away-- (but at least he is on the same list of credits as a bunch of A-list actors).
Yet he was earning $5-6 million per film in his prime....?!

mohair_chair 04-13-2008, 01:53 PM "Sudden Death" is probably the best film he ever made, and it's a very good action flick.

bigbill 04-13-2008, 04:06 PM Bloodsport had Forest Whitaker. I believe he won an academy award.

Well, not for his acting, that's for sure. He does have other, uh, assets though.
And, I ran across this on the web: pretty funny

Leopold Porkstacker 04-13-2008, 08:01 PM I think that “Timecop” was the only movie he was in that had semi-decent acting.

"Jean-Claude has three expressions: worried, charming, and doing a split. Of the three, doing a split is the most convincing." heehee

I recall reading that mighty Steven didn't want to get his character killed in that movie and caused some trouble during the filming... Maybe he didn't read the script at all. :D Death of his character was fantastic twist in the plot anyway, went to theatre expecting to see something like Under Siege 3 and the guy dies within ten minutes.
I don't like Van Damme at all but at least he is taking some punches in his movies whereas mr Seagal doesn't get hit at all and doesn't even bother to record all of his dialogue anymore.

That's Segal's technique; not getting hit. Watch any movie he is in and 95% of his moves are simply deflecting the attacker.
The best advice I ever got from a friend who was into Tae-Kwan-Do (sp?)
"What the best way to not get hurt in a fight? Don't get hit."
Note: This post is not meant to imply Segal is better than Van Damme or anything like that. It is simply an observation of Segal's technique. We now take you back to the thread about JCVD

It hasn't been about his technique since 90's, he's just plain lazy these days. I've seen almost all of his movies, just haven't had time for the latest ones... :blush2:
