Just got this email forwarded to me. Be carefull out there.

I thought I'd pass this along as a cautionary tale...

Yesterday afternoon ( 4/15 ) about 5:00 Ted Richardson, Mike Heffernon and I were cresting Coleman Valley Rd near Willow Creek on a ride out to the coast. Just as we started to descend a red pickup that was coming towards us swerved over into our side of the road. The driver was coming straight at us and honking his horn. He swerved to miss us, yelled something about hating us and flipped us off.

We've been making an effort not to be too confrontational towards drivers that are being *******s but we each looked at each other and decided that we couldn't let this pass. We pursued this car down Coleman Valley and caught up with him just up from OAEC west entrance. He had stopped in the middle of the road blocking two other cars and waved them by. We got on both sides of his truck and a few choice words and hand gestures were exchanged and he then drove off towards Occidental.

We resumed our ride but soon noticed he had turned around and was heading back towards us. As we didn't want to be on our bikes anywhere near this nutcase we pulled over into the Timber Lane pullout, got off our bikes, and awaited his return. He drove by us and stopped about 50 yards past us. Again, he blocked the road and a car stopped behind him. He emerged from his truck, stood in the middle of the street and again began yelling at us. He was too far away for us to see if he had anything in his hand although we all three agree it appeared that he did.

We decided that this guy was clearly deranged and the best course was a call to the police. We headed back to Occidental and filed a report with the police.

Friends - this guy was dangerous! He was middle aged, slightly built with straggly hair. He drove a red pick-up (possibly Toyota or Datsun) with a white camper - license 6J30088. Interestingly, he had Mendocino Redwood Company plaques on the side of the truck. Mike called and left a lengthy message for the head of security for MRC. This guy did not seem like someone who MRC would employ and we suspect he stole the signs and put them on his truck. We're waiting to hear back.

So - be careful out there. If you see this guy or his truck call the CHP and file a report. He needs to be off the road so we can enjoy our recreation of choice without being threatened and assaulted.

Glad you are ok, but don't think I'd be chasing someone like that in order to flip him off!

I am glad you got the plate number and filed a report with the police. Also glad it didn't get real ugly.

Here is some information that may help
http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/vehtests/pubtstqry.aspx
You can enter the license number and verify the vehicle. In your case it shows it as a 1995 Toyota truck.

I agree. I have confronted my fair share of drivers in my time, but I am always logical and calm in my discussions with them. That's the only thing that is going to help our cause.
