View Full Version : Thinking about doing a self supported Door Peninsula tour RobW 04-20-2008, 06:12 PM Would be coming across from Michigan on the Ludington ferry. Any advice/tips/routes would be appreciated... immerle 04-21-2008, 09:53 AM Been to Door County, never by bike. However, I do have a couple of observations. Summer there is great, but short. Spring is long, windy and cold. I check the average temps before I would commit to a specific week. It could be miserable. If you’re thinking about camping, you may want to shoot for next year. Campsites are hard to come by if you don’t plan way, way in advance. The same may apply to hotels. Holiday weekends there are madness. Avoid at all costs. That string of quaint little towns can turn into one, long traffic jam. Two summers ago, my father in-law rented a cottage at Clark Lake and I went up for a weekend. Right down the road was Whitefish Dunes state park, which seemed to be a destination for bikers. The roads around there like picture postcards. I'm lucky in that I can schedule my vacation on literally a day's notice. I will wait for favorable forcasts. My plan was to go up on Sunday morning and do the riding during the week. I have seen some info that leads me to believe there are quite a few walk in type camp sites available in many of the parks, is this not accurate? I'll have to make sure I hit Whitefish Dunes, it sounds like... RobW 04-22-2008, 04:54 AM This is all the advice I'm going to get here? C'mon guys, I know someone has details on routes and parks, whatnot... Roadhead 04-24-2008, 11:30 AM I did a 70 mile ride from Egg Harbor(its near the south east side on the green bay side) to Gils Rock, the north most point of the Peninsula, as well as a handful of day rides. Lucky my girlfriend has nice rustic cabin there so we do nice day rides. As far as weather, routes and amount of people well. Summer is early spring/summer is a nice time to go, everything is in bloom and it's fairly warm (50 is warm to me, cuz chicago gets cold). Routes, there are tons of back-country roads with little to no traffic on them, even during peak "tourist" season. If your looking to ride thought the little towns you can, but they do get crowded. A few of the bike shops in the area lead-"semi-fast" group rides for more serious riders. It's really beautiful to ride thought the national parks as well. There is so much to see and ride. If you get the chance I would definitely give it a try. hers are some map bike DC stuff. http://www.doorcounty.com/outdoor/biking-hiking.aspx superxjman 04-25-2008, 09:21 AM Thanks for the map / link. I'm planning a solo ride from Milwaukee to the Door this fall (after Labor day), this will be helpful. weltyed 04-30-2008, 10:01 AM walk-in campsites might all be gone when you get there. they have some reserved as walk-ins, but they go fast and turn over often. i think penn. state park opens up the walk-ins on thursday or something, and they go quick. newport beach usually has something open, but that is way up on the north east tip. i saw some bikers camping up there last year. Triker 05-05-2008, 02:14 PM See if you can find an on-line cue sheet for the Door County Century—it will give you some back roads to consider. If you come on non-weekend days your luck with traffic and campsites will be much better. |
