Just purchased a used Redline Monocog as a neighborhood bike. Came with a 17 tooth cog and I would like to change to a 16 or 15. I looked on line this morning and do not know what "type" cog to purchase or the best place to buy. Figured you all could help.
Thanks,
Lew

Fixed gear? Freewheel? BMX cog?
What type of hub does the bike have?

Dave,
BTW big fan of your post. I have to plead ignorance on the type of hub. I was hoping you guys could tell me.
This is what the add said. "The bike comes with New OEM Redline Cranks-Post-Stem-Headset-Hubs(6 Bolt IS Disc laced to Alex DH19 Rims)" If I need to I can look at it closer tonight, even remove it if necessary. I do know it has a lockring.
Thanks again,
Lew

can you freewheel, i.e., stop pedalling without going azz over teakettle?

Yes, can freewheel...
my guess is it's a singlespeed bmx fw... shimano for ~15 or so. possibly a fw tool and whip if you don't have 'em, or let shop install. but it could be a freehub, needing a cassette cog, although I kinda doubt it on that bike

A close-up photo would help...:)
what you need is to go to your LBS and pick up the 15t BMX freewheel you need. Take the bike, while you're there have them remove the old freewheel and install the new one so you don't have to buy the tool to do it yourself. Or buy the freewheel removal tool and the freewheel and install it yourself, fairly easy to do.
This is the freewheel you're looking for BTW.

Unfortunately a 15t freewheel will be to small for your hub threads because its made for bmx hubs. 16t+ will work for normal threads (which I'm assuming the monocog has). AC racing made a 15t for normal threads with the pawls on the outboard, but they stopped making them and the patent is still valid.

Agree but let's make sure it's a freewheel type hub.. I"m almost postive this bike uses a cassette type single speed hub.
If that's the case, there is what he needs

Looked at it closer last night. It is the Shimano type with a lockring. In fact, I took the 15t from an old casette I had and it fit just fine. It was thin compared to the one I took off and when I rode it was a little noisy. I will buy a single specific cog. What is the difference in the 2 from Exel Sports other than price and the cheap one does not offer a 15t?

Probably not that much difference,.. Do a search for "Shimano BMX cog". I think danscomp.com sells them as well as other BMX sites. Shimano sells their own version and it's less than $20.00..I have a 16T and it works fine
