what do you all make of this?

30 shootings a weekend? and it's not even summer?

time to build new jails, update gun laws, increase police, and get people involved

for you that live there, is this nothing new? I remember living in Savannah which averages I think 1.5 murders a week for a city that is 250,000 or that is what I read when I was living in Hilton Head 99-02

I remember for New Years the owner of the local news station came on after the news and talked about all the violence and blood in Savannah

What s Chicago like? Savannah was safe in the day but as soon as it turned dark it was deadly. Mostly drug related muggings done by trigger happy addicts

I think you'll find that the vast majority of shootings involve criminals on both sides of the gun. I have a difficult time not saying "who cares".

Do you remember that thread about fuel prices and all the nice talk about conserving energy by choosing to live in the city versus the suburbs? I do and I know from 20 years of experience that those bullets don't just hit criminals; more than often they kill or wound our innocent neighbors, damage private property and sometimes even our own loved ones. I'm not ignorant enough to think or say "who cares".

And I do care about the innocent people who get caught in the crossfire. It's a terrible waste.

The not so innocent, not so much. In fact, not at all. The sooner they kill each other off, the better.

/I don't like people so I'd opt to live in the country/suburbs regardless.

I agree about not caring at about these criminals but the problem is that replacements are always coming up faster than they can kill each other off.

I'm not exactly a people person either; there are lots of us living in the city. I've found that people in the city don't tend to get all up in my business like they do country/burbs (where I was raised).

Wild guess but I figure as the economy worsens the violence will increase. Just a hunch.

I read the Tribune fairly regularly and when I saw that number I was like "WTF? Did Big Al make a come-back?"

But I guess it's good that they are exercising their 2nd amendment rights, cause who knows what would've happened if they didn't have their guns?? I mean our government probably wouldn't exist if all those peoples didn't own guns, right?

It all because of the blood feuds between the gangs of Lake Forest and Winnetka. They all get their weapons down in Kenilworth. If you are wise, you stay the hell out of those areas after dark.

I'm waiting from someone from the RNC to blame this on Obama and Clinton. I mean, they're both from Illinois right?

Thank god we have our 2nd amendment rights... These gangs wouldn't be able to kill each other so quickly...and the government would collapse...and we'd lose our freedom of speech too...

Handguns (along with spray paint) are already illegal in Chicago proper. The mayor is even suing suburban gun sellers in an effort to further his vision of a "gun free society". You can see that that type of regulation works great, as there are few shootings and even less graffiti.

Notwithstanding all of that, it's a much safer city than the hype would suggest. Most of it is safe both day and night.

Don't you know that ALL gun owners are murdering criminals?

Absolutely!

Hopefully, after Mayor Daley's master takes effect, he'll move into knife control.

This, of course, coming from the man who claims Chicago is a "bike friendly" city.
