View Full Version : Be very careful at the intersection of Caņada Rd & Hwy 92

I was riding along Caņada Rd today and was about to make a left turn onto Hwy 92 when two cars ran red light and sped by right in front of me. It was really upsetting because I had the same experience at the exact location just a month ago....so when the light turned green for me, I actually did check the cross traffic to make sure the cars were stopped. But as soon as I began to cross the intersection, two cars just blew by me from the far lane...completely oblivious of me and another rider.

So to anyone who rides in that area...be very careful and don't assume that cars will stop even if you have the green signal! I happened to come across two CHP officers at a gas station on the way back, so I told them about the incident and asked if there was any chance a traffic camera could be installed at the intersection. The response: "that just wouldn't happen" -- apparently traffic camera is reserved for "cities" only

That's good advice. That light is very poorly designed. First time drivers there do not expect that light.

So as a cyclist, wait for the green light and only proceed when there's no cars or you're assured the cars have stopped.

Yep. Terrible intersection. I ride through it twice a week and learned early on to never assume vehicles are going to stop there. I usually wait until cars have completely stopped, or until it's entirely clear in both directions.

You probably know, but in case you don't, do use the button on the center divide of Caņada Rd. It usually changes the light pretty quickly and gives you enough time to put your bottle back, swallow, clip in, and make it through the intersection. Trying to follow a car through it usually doesn't give me enough time, and that can get scary, because the traffic on 92, traveling at at least 55 mph, will have a green. :(

Yep -- I use that button all the time. I'm starting to wonder though if I'll actually have enough time to make that left-turn if I wait to make sure the cars in all lanes are stopped. Maybe I'll just start making U-turn at the end of Caņada...
