I built a single speed hardtail with 5 inches of travel a couple of weeks ago and now I've bought a unicycle. I'm not sure what's caused me to head off on this tangent.

Any other unicyclist out there?

I used to ride one years ago. It does wonders for your balance. I rode it to school for a while, about a mile each way. Not QUITE as efficient as a bike. I'm thinking about getting another one for the fun of it. I'd like to try it on some of our local mtb trails..

The idea has intrigued me for a while.

How difficult is it to learn? I don't think I could handle the abuse from neighbors as went through a long learning curve.

So what was it like commuting to school on a unicycle? 1 mile seems like a haul for a single wheel. Unless you're post is a joke, which is fine cause it made me laugh. :D

...when I was still young, the kids next door had one for a while. We all managed to ride passably within an hour or so, i.e., we could get up and down the block, make turns, start and stop reasonably gracefully. Biggest problem I had was avoiding the urge to lean forward--at least while getting used to riding a unicycle, it's helpful to sit bolt upright on the thing until you get acquainted with the balancing issues.

Important tip: don't use clipless pedals... :D

Not a joke, just did it for the heck of it. It was a long haul but I didn't do it every day. Basically a 1:1 drivetrain. As for learning to ride it. It took me about 2 days at age 13. Today at age 42 it would probably take me a year! I just held on to a post in our yard to get on it and kept at it. It is a lot of fun and definitely a conversation starter!

...to realize we were supposed to have more trouble with it.

I've seen Uni's that used a larger wheel. This increases the gearing a bit. Two guys I saw were riding around Lake Tahoe- about 74 miles with some hills.

We have a local that rides one all over like a road bike, he'll do 30-35 miles. Not too fast but he gets there.

I don't find much interest in them myself, but they look kinda cool....

A guy do Cycle North Carolina, 460+miles over a 6 day period. Or was that a guy riding his bike backwards(sitting on the handlebars)?
