View Full Version : IBEX X-Ray
Does anyone have any feedback on this bicycle?
It looks like the complete bike has a solid parts selection 105, Ritchey, except for maybe the wheels, at a good price. I currently ride a Surly and find it too heavy for racing.
What are your general impressions? How's the ride? Is it overly harsh on the roads?
Thanks for the info,
Derf
see http://www.ibexbikes.com/Bikes/2004/X-Ray-Specs.html
I searched the message board and noticed that no one seamed to own one of these. So, I guess this thread should die....
But, if you do have any info. please post it.

ottodog 08-22-2004, 07:49 AM I don't know but I just ordered a frame from them. I've been looking for an inexpensive cross frame. I'll let you know what I think when it arrives.
S3Hoover 08-22-2004, 11:08 AM I will caveat this post by saying that I am a newbie and the X-Ray is the first non X-Mart bike I've owned in many years, so I can't make a whole lot of comparisons other than to the bikes that I test rode. That being said, I am extremely pleased with the X-Ray. Jack at Ibex answered my email questions the same day and my bike shipped the day I ordered it. It was very easy to assemble, even for a newbie. I did take it to my LBS for a tune up to make sure everything was good to go. The guys at the LBS were impressed with the X-Ray, especially when I told them how much I paid for it! They also said it really did not need much tuning. The only problem that I did run into was that the rim tape they put on was not very good which caused me to puncture two tubes before I realized the problem and had it changed, since then no problems. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend the X-Ray. One other point, if you do plan on racing with the X-Ray, be advised that the brakes are set up like a road bike in that the left lever controls the front wheel which is opposite the way a cross bike is generally set up. Hope this helps.

I think that the cable routing is a little "interesting." Cyclocross standard is top of the top tube but I think the X-Ray is kind of side of the top tube. There was an Ibex thread here a while back and an Ibex rep answered some questions and mentioned that they would address the cable routing.
What's your cable routing look like?

The right brake lever controls the rear brake and the cable runs along the top tube at the 7 o'clock position if you were looking down the length of the top tube from the rear of the bike. I hope that my description is clear. OK, hre's my best attempt at a picture.

It does sound like Ibex is going to address this issue. Taken from their website: For 2005 our road lineup will see several changes. Our X-Ray CX frame will get new geometry with shorter top-tubes and revised cable guides.
Thanks for all of the great info. It looks like the bike is a winner except for the cable routing and the long top tube.
Thanks for all of the insight.

teamwike 08-24-2004, 08:04 PM Sorry been away missed this Question. I do have one and like it. I am a Road/MTB
rider and was looking for a bike that can do both. I am working towards making it a full disc ride. For the price it's a nice ride and has sparked my interest in cross racing.

atpjunkie 08-25-2004, 02:47 PM Hey some of us like em long dammit. Go Go Gorillas! actually there are a few chges to be made, cable routing, a HT extension to minimize spacers as well as geo chgs. The owners are quite interested in rider input and have actually inquired riders what they would like. Ya gotta give them pts for RbR R&D and just, well giving a damn.
The Walrus 08-25-2004, 05:20 PM There goes my interest in the Ibex--just as I'll never likely get one of the newer VooDoo Wazoos since they made 'em taller and shorter. Guess it's back to my original choice, either the Soma or Interloc 'crossers, for my "cheap" 'cross project, as they both have about the longest top tubes for any given size that I've seen on production frames.

I dont even know if this is a good price or not? I orderd my Tufo's from him. He upgraded me from the bottom of the line Tufos to the Prestige C because he only had one of the less expensive tires at no extra cost to me.

I ordered a pair of 30mm Prestige tubies from him at $57.50 per. When I talked to him on the phone, I mentioned that his were the best prices I had found. He asked me what prices were in general and he said something like "I think ours are a little too low."
Anyway, with the dollar taking a dump against the euro, these are the best US prices I've seen. Buy up and tell him you saw it on road bike review dot com. Maybe we can hit him up for some advertising!
The Walrus 08-26-2004, 11:04 AM ...about in the ballpark, although I've seen it for $20 less. Prices are a moot point right now, though, since I have to get rid of some of my current stuff before I can seriously think about anything new.

God know you have helped me out in the past.

I've seen the T's for $20 less but not the Prestiges. And I haven't seen the Prestiges for under $60 since the dollar took a dive.
atpjunkie 08-26-2004, 12:41 PM ST 57.5 C-C (60 C-T) TT 59 C-C....plenty of S/O and perfect reach w/ a 110 stem
My Cross Concept 61 C-T 59.5 C-C TT........mmmmmm gorilliffic!
atpjunkie 08-26-2004, 12:43 PM Empellas run long as well. Glad Bianchi is simian friendly
The Walrus 08-26-2004, 06:58 PM ...that reference to the $20 price difference was on the Interloc 'cross frame at Glory. I'm not really sure how the tubies appeared here... :D
The Walrus 08-26-2004, 07:04 PM "Glad Bianchi is simian friendly..."
So true, so true--I think I'll go out to the garage now and fondle a couple of my Axises. :D
atpjunkie 08-27-2004, 12:43 PM I adore my cross concept. about as yummy as a Al frame can be.
tri_fast_eddie13 08-28-2004, 06:39 AM The Ibex website has them for $299 frame & carbon fork. What a deal! That TT got me though. The size that was closest was the 54. With that TT I would have to run something like an 8 cm stem making it a very quick handler and still making my reach about the same as my roadie. I was also concerned about the 74 degree seat tube angle. Isn't this steep for a cross bike? As far as the TT goes, even the 51has a 56 cm TT and that size would probably make it difficult to keep the bars from being 4" below the seat (I usually run the top of the seat 74 cm from the center of the bb)
Thoughts? Am I making sense?
