View Full Version : tubular gluing success and Tufo Tape Question

I finished the gluing of my front tire, and it seemed to work well. However, I would like to experiment with the Tufo tape (extreme or regular) on the rear tire. Anybody have a good procedure for using the tape, or do I just follow the directions? Any opinions on how well the tape works for cross tires?

from cxworld. thinner and used in conjunction w/ glue. very sturdy connection.

Do you have to use Vittoria's glue with the tape? I've got a stockpile of conti rim cement that I'd like to use up.

what do you do when you need to replace a tire? with just the bare tape, it peels off pretty well, do you leave a bunch of residue if you do the glue/tape method?

Tufo tape is different from other tape.

Tufo tape is a glue tape and does not require other glue. While the other tape does not contain glue and from what I understand it is used as a medium that absorbs glue that is applied to it to allow a better bond between the rim and tire.

Do not use outside glue with the Tufo tape, the regular works fine for 'cross without it.

Have you used the Tufo tape for racing cyclocross?

Should you retape every season?

How difficult is it to remove the tape when remounting?

I've got a pair of Tufo Prestiges stretching on my NOS Wheelsmith built wheels with DA hubs, 14/15 spokes and Reflex rims. I'm itching to get them glued (or taped?).

Thanks.

I have used the tufo tape for my road wheels and it is a delight to work with, it just comes right off when the old tire is removed. I don't know if it is any good for cross, however.

tufo tape alone is fine for road wheels, but you really need more "stick" for CX tubbies.

I have always used the layered glue method with great success - this year I will try tufo regular tape combined with a layer of glue on both rim and tire

usually thin coat of Soyo on rim and tire. apply tape when rim glue is tacky but nearly dry.
then a layer of Vitt. cement on tire (like it as it's tinted so you can see coverage better, but I'm sure Conti or Soyo would be fine). peel tape backing, just a light smatter of glue, apply tire. Vittoria tape is sticky, not just a 'base' it definitel has some decent grip on it's own. I've seen too many Tufo tape tires 'roll' to trust alone. my tires are FIRMLY on, I have one set one season old I may keep to see if it lasts 2 years (dangerous I know but I can't budge the tire the least bit right now, I'll manually check before I ride them).

I've used Tufo tape alone with great results. The tire went on easy and it really stuck. Raced and trained on them for one season. The tire was a bit of a pain to get off; but, the rim cleaned up nice.

Regular vs. Extreme - Be aware that Tufo recomends the extreme tape above 73 deg F. I know the distibutor for North America is in Canada, but come on...

I don't know if they have improved the tape recently, but two years ago I had a very bad experience with Tufo tape. Both my son-in-law and I used it and we both had the tires slip causing cuts to the tube at the stem. 2 ruined brand new tires. Granted- this happened during the epic race at Napa with 7" of rain in 3 days. I don't know if the extremely wet conditions caused it or what, but we've gone back to glue. We were fortunate and the LBS where we bought the tires and tape managed to get us warranty replacement tires.

I used them in Quebec-Montreal road race last year and we rode about 6 hours in the driving rain. When we were stopped at a train crossing, I looked at the back tire and globs of glue were being extruded from the gap between the tire and rim. I had used the tufo tape, but it was applied to a rim with a number of coats of old glue, so I think the bumpy surface allowed water to get between. I suspect it might have been fine if I had used on a new, clean rim.

They also note that the "EXTREME" tape is only activated fully by the higher pressure of a road tubular. Ergo, for 'cross, you'd want the other not-so-extreme Tufo tape. I've got no direct experience with either.

I'm using the "Belgain Way" tape that Cyclocrossworld.com sells. It is used along with regular tubular glue. It's kind of a pain to install, as it's quite tacky and will permanently adhere small housepets to your rims if you're not careful, but it's hard to imagine dislodging it unintentionally -- and Stu Thorne told me that budging intentionally wasn't all that easy, either. Still, a tubular that's hard to remove makes me happy, so I'm planning to stick with the stuff, no pun intended. BTW, I think I ordered three rolls of the tape, and used a little over half of one to do a single wheelset, so it's a good thing I'm happy with it!

Cheers!

agreed, use same set up. did one on a warm day, didn't get the valve lined up perfectly and well, it's just gonna stay that way until next year. STICKY.

I had some DNF's due to the original Tufo tape letting go, both from my carbon Zipps are from the tire. I was tipped to use Vervecken's mechanics' trick : layers of glue everywhere : on rim, then tape, then glu, then glue on tire, and stick it together. Process takes a few days in total, but MAN did that tire stick to the rim! Took some brutal force to get it off when I decided I wanted to use the Zipps for a team tt. real confidence inspriring. I'm 85kg on a good day, with questionnanble CX skills being a MTB'er, so it's good to know my tubs will stick.
I hope I'll ride some CX more often in the future, or I'll never get rid of my pile of Tufo's I gathered in the short period I was so unwise to want to be distributor for them. Good product, uncertain business, at least in Europe.
