I'm looking for some 700c wheels that have DISC hubs (135mm), that I can use for everything from fast narrow road tires to some larger width for fire-road riding.

To me it seems that there are few wheelsets that are 700c and have a disc hub.

The only one I know of is the Mavic Speed City -- but this is oriented toward the MTB who wants to go to a road tire, not a CX per se. Are these a good choice? I heard that Mavic is difficult to deal with for their hub parts and repairs. They seem to go for about $350 a pair.

Are there other wheelsets out there like this?

The other option is to build up a set ... maybe Shimano XT hubs and Mavic rims? Will this be cheaper and/or better?

Thanks!!

I think the Speed Cities have been discontinued?

XT hubs to Velocity Aerohead rims with 14/15 spokes. Can't go wrong.

The Speed City wheels are still on the Mavic site -- where did you hear this? Are they replacing them with something else?

Where is the best place to order wheels from online?

Colorado Cyclist is popular. I'm sure others can suggest more ...

XT hubs a very durable, but very heavy. I would suggest spending some more coin on better hubs. Kings, Ringle, Hugi...

Can't find any sale on their website.

It's in catalog #193 Mid Summer Ed. Page #65 right column 2/3rds down.
$189.95 front
$209.95 rear

So maybe not the best deal to be found.

Go to www.oddsandendos.com and get Mike Garcia's phone number off the website. Call him up and have him build you a set of custom wheels. They will be stronger, lighter, and cheaper than anything else you can find. He built me a pair of Velocity Aerohead rims on 32-hole WTB Laser Disc Lite hubs (lighter than XT, sealed cartridge bearings...very smooth). The build is very strong and have not needed to be trued even after 1.5 years of hard trail riding on the cross bike. I use Avid road disc brakes and this combination has gotten me out many hairy descents in rocky trails. These rims can accomodate as wide a tire as you are likely to fit on a cross bike. Call Mike, he's a good guy.
