Ok, racing CX... computer? yes? no? Which model/type will withstand the pounding? What options? I would think cadence does not matter… just go with the normal speed, dist, etc… most likely a computer built for MTB.

I use Cateye Enduro. it works great, has very thick wire and 2 tire size selections and usually can be found on sale somewhere.

A heart rate monitor might be the better thing to have...you'll be surprise how much time you will spend in the anaerobic area!!

Wires and sensors are perfect for catching on something. I ripped off a sensor last year. No computer for me. I do like wearing a heart rate monitor to understand just how ugly a race is.

HR monitor only.

My CX bike is for racing. CX racing is based 99% on turning yourself inside out. You don't need cadence or speed to know if you're not pushing yourself hard enough.

Besides which... If you're really serious about racing, you'll be running 2 bikes. (bottom line, if you flat with only 1 bike, you either aren't going to win anyway or you're a sandbagger) As such, the computer only stores the info from one bike.

Better to have a HR monitor on your wrist so you can see what the engine did. Your top speed and/or cadence in the race is meaningless.

Yeah for all those reasons mentioned above, i never had a computer on my cx bike. But I just bought one, mainly to monitor my training, I got a cool looking red one off of Ebay, its a schwinn. I have zero faith in schwinn bike computers but it was red with a white racing stripe-----and its going on my Specialized CX (red and white) bike, so i just had to get it.

I've used those big Planet bike computers before, maybe i got a bad one, but i couldnt see the numbers at all, they really faded to nothing, even with new batteries. I've had good luck with Echo computers before, theyre hard to find now, but the one on my TT/Tri bike is still wroking very well. I've used Ciclosport 434 as well, been happy with it, not sure how well wireless works when covered in mud, as i had this on my road bike.

I wouldnt get cadence, its just one more wire, unless you get that new wireless cadence--again not sure about the mud.

I'd say get a computer if your cx bike isnt a pure race cx bike. Some of these guys have 4 cross bikes or more. And one they race on, sometimes i like to commute on my cx, and id always like to have more info about my cx training.
