View Full Version : catholic issues and the presidential race
dr hoo 09-08-2004, 05:28 AM If you are curious how your positions, and Kerry's, and Bush's for that matter, match up with the positions of the Catholic church, you can take the following quiz:
http://www.votingcatholic.org/quiz_1.php?session_id=1313000689
The results are, shall we say, interesting. They will show your agreement/disagreement in the answers to these questions with bush, kerry, and the bishops of the catholic church.
MarkS 09-08-2004, 05:55 AM The poll confirmed that I agree more with John Kerry than the Bishops or George Bush.

I found myself in disagreement with all three for the most part with a slight favor for John Kerry
dr hoo 09-08-2004, 07:03 AM This is a good example of poorly written poll questions if your goal is to accurately measure public opinion. From the link you posted last week, at a minimum the following qualities of a good question are violated:
[snip]
How did your answers compare?
suonata
In this case, the poll questions are poorly constructed, but with good reason. The poll options are rephrasings of the catholic positions on the issues, so they are limited by the catholic statements.
I did not take the quiz, btw. I just passed it on given that there was discussion here in the past about Kerry's positions re: the church.
I scored 35% Kerry, 35% Bishops, and -56% Bush, even though I am voting for Bush, and I disagree with everything Kerry has ever supported in the past, and have always supported the Rupublicans. For reference, I am not a closet liberal, the poll is whacked.

53t, while the poll is bunk, it sounds like you need to do some reading to really find where you personally stand on the issues.
I myself have been a life-long republican. I liked what both parties were saying in the 2000 election, but I sided with Bush primarily because he said he didn't believe in using the US military as nation builders. Right now, he has ZERO credibility with me. If you truly vet this administration and see all the lies they've told, you too might become a Kerry supporter.
That being said, I've done a lot of reading this past year. I've truly listened to what was being said. Where they were taking comments out of context. Then I read some more. One book that helped me open my eyes to the lies is Al Franken's aptly titled book "Lies, and the Lying Liars who tell them." I know, I know, but another great book that's actually non-partisan was Bob Woodward's "Plan of Attack." These two really helped me see the light.
Good luck,

I, too, do not like many of the current administration's policies. I also cannot stand John Ashcroft. However, I cannot become a Kerry supporter. He is the polar opposite of what I would consider a good candidate based on my Goldwater-esque view of the world.
I've studied Conservative policy under Mickey Edwards, I have relatives who have worked in this administration (high up), I have run and won as a Republican, with good party support, and I will support my party unless they completly disolve.
Save yourself, it's too late for me! :)
