I currently have Ritchy Speedmax on my crosser, which are great for trails and singletrack, but I suspect that they won't be worth crap in the mud. Am I right? Any suggestions? Tire clearance limiits me to nothing over 700x30.

Michelin Muds, obviously. However, your width restrictions will most likely preclude using the Muds. I suggest that you get Tufo tubular clinchers. I've had good luck with them in the mud, they come in a 30mm width, and they are MUCH better than a tubed tire for racing.
Thanks. I was looking at the Tufo's. I haven't buoght anything bike related in a while so I guess I'll click on the good folks @ Excel sports :)

Hey, check out the prices at Glory Cycles. I bought a pair of tubies from them recently and they had great customer service. I think their prices are good also ...

And if you buy from them, tell them you heard about them from this site ...

Did the Sycip free CX clinic this weekend. One of the team guys, John I think, was running Tufos and I asked about use in the mud. Said he uses them all season w/ no issues here in SF Bay Area races. I think I'm going to go the Tufo clincher route, thanks also for the referral tip...

I just mounted some Michelin Mud 2s
Rolls slightly better than its predessor due to stepped knobs
Good slimy mud performance. Deep long sections packed the tread, but they cleared fairly quickly.
Good Braking. Cornering was Average. Although new to me, they seemed like they wanted to fold in high speed tight corners (my Cross Blasters never felt that way. Maybe just something to get used to)
Good pinch flat resistance. Cased a 18" curb with the rear wheel that bent my rim. No flat!
The 30's look to be running slightly larger.

Plus: good tires, slightly oversized as stated and good grip.
Minus: soft side walls good for suppleness and traction but if you are a larger rider you'll need higher psi to avoid pinch flatting. I've had more flats on Mich (Muds, Sprints etc..) than I care to remember. Tufo, like Grifo, Dugast tend to have wide spacing between tread knobs. good for shedding mud but take some getting used to. a good choice.
