Got my confirmation card last week! Hopefully, the RBR kit will be complete and in my hands for the ride.

In all my years of riding, I've never done that ride. Maybe next year.
From the course profile, it looks like it might be a tad tough with a 12 X 23. Is it do-able with a 39 X 25 as a low gear ?

My first few times I rode with a 39-23 low gear, and never walked (walking is fairly common on some of the steep hills). I now ride a 39-27 low and have walked Mount Tabor 2 of the last 4 years. I think if you can do it, the gearing is secondary to fitness. Lower gearing might not make one able to climb hills that are too difficult with higher gearing. I think a 25 is probably okay.

You read profiles well. It is a tad tough with a low gear of 39x23 although with a little huffing, puffing and cursing you can ride up any hill. With a 39x25 you will be able to comfortably dodge all the walkers which is as much of a challenge as the steepness of the hills. People that do not regularly ride or that do not feel comfortable on hills might appreciate a triple. I have ridden it with a 39x21 when I was young and naive and with a 39x25 two weeks after having my appendix removed. While there are some steep hills they are all fairly short.

Hilly 100 is an end of season rolling party for regular cyclist. For weekend warriors (non-cyclist) who dig their bike out of the back of the garage it is do-able a challenge with a sense of accomplishment at the end. Great ride and loads of fun.

Sounds like the first time I do it, I'll use a 25. If that's not too much of a challenge, I can always use a 23 the next time.

Im good to go, pretty excited, this will be the first time I have done a ride of this size! All I can say is if you are coming from a flat area and consider yourself a quick rider you better get out here for a weekend or two. These hills can be freaking humbling. My first three weeks here were TOUGH! Looks like it will be an amazing ride though so nice looking.

I just use my 11-23 at the Hilly and that's fine. The front is a 53-39 combination. Spin, spin and spin.

I was in your town earlier today. I had some business in Bloomington and was there until noon.

Everyone going to the Hilly should post what jersey's they are going to be wearing, since it doesn't appear the RBR jerseys will be available.

As the ride approaches and we can see what the weather will bring, I'll post my jerseys.

Since the RBR jersey won't be here. Fellow RBR's lets try to meet up.

Me: 6'2" riding a Litespeed Vortex, Campy Record with a Snakeskin SLR. The two jerseys I'll be wearing that weekend are below.

I'll be there mid-afternoon Friday, about 3:00-3:30. Staying in the camping area, look for my truck: black F-150 with my screen name on the plate.
Me: 5'10", on an Airborne Zeppelin with a blue Postal saddle. I'm on the left in the attached photo, will wear the green jersey one day. Not sure what jersey the other.

Next is a pic of my truck

I wish that my current injury wasn't gonna keep me from this ride... It's the first Hilly I've missed in a few seasons (4). Last year was REALLY cold. This season I took a spill on the mt. bike and broke my shoulder... So, since I can't really pull on the bars and I'm not Tyler Hamilton (who can race all over France with a broken collar bone) I won't be there this year. Dang!!!

BTW - I'd be all up for a few training rides up Mt. Tabor... But it will have to wait til next season.... have fun everyone... I'll be there in spirit.

This is my first Hilly, and all I have to train on in Chicago is the parking ramp of the AMC theater. Plus, I'm running in the marathon the weekend before the Hilly. I'll be on the green/purplish Klein Q Carbon riding with a bigger dude in an IU jersey on a Trek 1000 (probably fairly common). If I'm coherent from the pain killer/beer mix that I'll need, it would be great to meet some of the people from RBR.

How bad is Mt Tabor? Is it right after a rest stop? Are there any false flats to regroup, or do you just tap out a rhythm all the way up?

First Old Style is on me!

Just got back from the Hilly today. Great ride and great people, beautiful scenery and no flat terrain. Mt. Tabor is a grind, straight up. Beanblossom hill is much longer and will get you goin. I didn't plan on doing any unscheduled stops, but the little park at the top of Beanblossom was just too inviting. At the bottom of Mt. Tabor the second oldest woman in the Hilly (79 years old) was saying that she didn't think it was on the 40 mile Sunday leg which it was. I went ahead on up and wonder if she climbed it or not. I rode a triple with a 13-27 so that I am not forced to stand 100 percent even on the steepest climbs. I train on a similar hill close to Indy that is about as steep but not as long. The weather was great and I wish I could post some pics, but I don't have a digital camera.

Yes, sir, that was a glorious weekend! Did it on my double with a 12-27, but my chain is worn so couldnt use the 27 so it was effectively a 12-24. Had to stand most of Tabor. I wish I had similar hills to train on, but here in central Illinois (Normal) it's rather flat. Going to Hilly is like visiting another world.

Where is this hill in Indy? I've found a few "hills" around me (southeast Indy) but nothing to come close to southern Indiana.

Thanks and congrats on the hilly! My 8 1/2 month pregnant wife wouldn't let me for some reason. ;)

My guess would be that he is referencing Fishback Road hill, which in my estimate is about a third to half the lenght of Tabor with a similar slope. Fishback Road is on the far northwest side of Indy.

Congrats on the new addition to your family, hopefully a future rider! The hill I'm talkin about is on Fishback road near Eagle Creek park. You can make a loop that includes Wilson Road which has a long slower climb to the same elevation. I make a few laps in both directions and then go inside the park and ride for awhile. Peds and cyclists get in the park for a buck, four bucks if you enter by auto. I haul to a park in Clermont and park my car there then ride several miles to get to the hills so I'm warmed up good by the time I get there. I can ride from home since I live in Avon but I have gotten lazy and not felt like riding in the park on some of those occasions. I was worried about breaking spokes since I had previously broken two spokes on the rear wheel that I used but everything on my bike performed flawlessly except for me. I fast shifted in the wrong direction once to get to a lower gear and had to stop and raise the wheel off the ground to get back. Hope you can make it next year.

Thanks! I see you answered the question while I was composing. You are right about the length differential and I started without knowing for sure whether I could make it, especially while watching others forced to stop. There was a young lady in front of me who was going about the same way I was and towards the top I noticed myself gaining on her without increasing my speed. I went around her and she stopped about 15 feet from the top. I felt bad for her getting that close and not quite making it to the top but I'll bet she'll make it next time. Sometimes I ride out to Wilbur and catch some nice long hills around there. I'm 5'8" and weigh 190 lbs so my goal for next year is to drag about 20 lbs less up that hill. If I can't lose all of the 20 I'll have to buy a lighter bike to make up for some of it.

Thanks for the info guys! I just bought my road bike last month so I'm still adjusting to getting buzzed by cars on the road, spinning, etc but I'll have to venture to that side of the city. Also, hope to hook on to some CIBA rides next year and drop my 20+ pounds (I'm a hefty 220) before next year's hilly!
