View Full Version : How much does your bike weigh? Maybe a poll topic?
Nate Haler 09-13-2004, 04:50 PM I'm currently riding a 19 y/o steel custom that was built for me, approx 63cm seat tube.
At the time, I thought it was pretty dang light for a bike that tall, but having just put it on the scale at the LBS (minus water bottles and frame-fit pump), it was just a tad under 23.5 pounds. 53/42 and 6 spd freewheel (21/13) w/downtube shifters. A classic.
The new bike (still waiting to be ridden, as the LBS wants to change out the stem for a shorter one which has been on backorder for 1.5 months!!!), tips the scales at about 18.25 pounds, in 64cm size. Aluminum frame w/carbon fork, seatstays, and seatpost. D/A 10spd, 53/39 and 25/12 cassette. Seems like it should be a lot easier to push up the hills.
What's average these days? Just curious...

tommyboypdx 09-13-2004, 05:42 PM With the fenders I added.... its not so light anymore....
terry b 09-13-2004, 07:10 PM My lightest bike is a 57cm (aluminum) Orbea Starship. It was my light-ish bike project and it weighs 16.25 pounds. There's probably another 1 lb. that could be lost if I was willing to make some compromises.
My heaviest bike (lugged steel) is a 57cm Colnago Master x Light. Pretty standard components - Chorus, Electrons, Looks, Pave, Fortezzas. It weighs exactly 20 lbs.
In between those are some 17s, 18s and 19s.
The Don 09-14-2004, 10:22 AM All 2K3 Chorus, Open Pro/Chorus wheels.
'03 gunnar roadie 58cm/shimano 105/ultegra/open thomson post eggbeaters 20.5lbs
may consider a lighter wheelset if/when the ultegra/open wheelset wear out, probably something like hugi/ac/or ck... not sure if i'm read to put on boutique type wheels on this 853 steel workhorse.

KickStand 09-14-2004, 07:02 PM Fuji 64 cm with Armadillos and one cage, 19.0 lb
Shane 09-14-2004, 09:19 PM 15lbs exactly for my Giant TCR composite with USE post, The Stem bar and stem, FSA superlight cranks, Coombe pedals, American Classic sprint 350 wheels, Brew racing brakes and ultegra drivetrain.
Klein Stage Comp R, Carbon Fork, 105 Triple, Cane Creek Aeroheat Wheels, Slime Tubes, Shimano 515 spds and water bottle cages, 57cm, right at 20 pounds. Rider has more weight problems than the bike.
Mapei 09-15-2004, 02:44 PM My 53 cm Colnago Dream with Chorus, Campy pedals and bottle cages - 18.7 lbs.
My 54 cm Rivendell Rambouillet with Campy Veloce - 23.9 lbs.
Raleigh Professional 56cm, w. Centaur, Zonda's, FSA CF cranks - about 1 1/3 STONE.
(I love saying that! That 'stone' thing just kills me for some reason... ;)
froze 09-15-2004, 09:12 PM 84 Trek 660 531cs lugged steel 56cm frame with 36spoked rims and all Suntour Superbe components; in current form with bottle cages and 700x25 Armadillo's I am at 22.5 pounds (last time I weighed it, it was without the Armadillos-these weigh just barely under 1 pound more then normal 25 tires). But by the time I add on my heavy seatbag, rear light, filled water bottles, pump (which isn't much) I got probably a 26 pounder.
When I raced this bike I had some lighter stuff on it as well; tubulars which were maybe 280 grms less then a racing clincher set up, lighter stem (Nitto Tech to get the bar up about 100 grams heavier), handlebar (Nitto bar is about 150grms heavier then the racing bars I used), lighter seat post (had a 45 grm heaver Superbe seat post I put, Brooks Swift saddle (about 200 grms heavier then a racing saddle)...these were all estimates. In the tubular racing days this bike weighed about a pound and a half less at 21 pounds total-this was an actual weight I had recorded during that time period.
If carbon forks were available back when I raced I could have dropped another pound off. And some of the newer wheelsets are lighter then even my old tubulars were, so who knows how much weight that change may have saved as well.
colker1 09-16-2004, 05:46 AM i never weighed any of my bikes.. i know that if i ever did, i would be immediately slower.
bahueh 09-16-2004, 02:41 PM well, I purchased a mid-range KHS flite 700 (ferrari red color) in a 54cm (which is sized a little big) and I've put as much carbon fiber on it as it will hold, sytace aero's on bullhorns, bar end dura ace shifters, FSA 172.5 cranks, ultegra pedals and it weighs in around -18. I can make it lighter with a better wheelset and I have to tell you, with the tight geometry and aluminum frame/carbon fork, its a great climber even with boat anchor wheelset.
cadence90 09-16-2004, 10:44 PM No compromises Kish titanium: 16 lbs. complete w/cages, computer, etc.

moschika 09-17-2004, 11:11 AM i have a custom curtlo true temper ox platinum, fillet brazed, DA9, open pros, conti 3000, speedplays, with cages came in at about 19#'s. it's got a semi-sloping top tube but if it was a strait top i usually ride around 54-55 size frame.
frogjasm 09-17-2004, 02:36 PM My Calfee Tetra comes in at around 8 kilos. I think about half of that is my brooks professional saddle. When I'm standing on climbs I remove the saddle and put it in my jersey pocket - makes the bike lighter.
Long live metrics.
...but it feels sooo good on the cheeks!
