View Full Version : Cateye Astrale wiring problem
burger 09-14-2004, 08:05 AM It seems that the wiring on my new Astrale 8 is messed up. I'll ride for 10 minutes and it won't work then all of a sudden it will start to work for a while then turn off again. Each time it turns off I jiggle the wire where it goes into the computer mount and it starts to work. I know it's not the magnets or sensors causing the problem. Is there any place to get a new wiring harness. I've used this computer for less than 300 miles, I didn't think I would have problems so quickly.

bimini 09-14-2004, 08:31 AM I took it back to the LBS about 3 weeks after I got it and they gave me a new harness kit. They did point out that the wires were pulled loose a little from the handlebar mounting bracket and it could of been an installation problem that caused the wires to pull loose. I explained I was pretty sure it was that way when I took it out of the box.
They were not arguing, just pointing out that you need to be carefull on the installation. They are a good LBS and I buy stuff from them when I can.
Try taking or sending it back. If too much time has passed or if the seller will not stand behind the product, you can buy a harness kits. The LBS had a couple.

Bluechip 09-14-2004, 08:35 AM First thing to check would be that the computer is all the way forward in the mount. It must go forward enough until it clicks and the locking tab goes up. On mine I had to physically lift the tab until it clicked but on my wifes it would click once it was far enough forward. I hope that was clear enough.
Another might be the wiring was stretched too tight and one of the wires has come loose from the mounting plate.
Good luck!
Don't need to mess with the LBS. Let them know what happened, they'll be glad to send you a new mounting kit, or computer. Some of the best customer service in the biz. I actually had 2 of my '8s fail and the first time got a new computer, 2nd a new mounting kit. They aim to please. Yeah, I'll be getting Cateye's from now on...
With that said, in spite of the great customer service, I'm done with the '8s. Now I'm trying the regular Astrale, so far so good. Don't need cadence anymore anyways: mostly riding my fixed gear anyways; cadence is either really slow or really, really fast!

I had this same problem with mine. Take the computer off of the bracket and take a bit of fine emery cloth and lightly scuff the connectors on both the computer and the bracket. You may need to do it again after a rain. I've actually taken the computer off during a ride and just rubbed it on the road to scuff the connectors and it started working again. If they get wet they oxidize like crazy. YMMV
Cheers,
Vaughn
I've recently had a similar problem, but not one that seems related to the wires or connections. One of my riding buddies, a computer programs, thinks it's a bug in the logic. Sometimes when I'm riding, if I hit the "mode" button to check on mileage or something other than cadence (where I usually leave it while riding), the mph will go to zero and the cadence will go to zero. I have to click on mode several times and, lo, it will start working again. Can't be the wires or connectors (can it?) because it is only triggered when I hit mode, unless the mere act of pressing mode messes with the connectors. Suggestions? Should I scuff the connectors a bit?

Yes, try cleaning the contacts on the back of the computer unit and on the mount.
Chef Tony 09-15-2004, 01:55 PM Mine would work for a while, then the display would give no readouts from the sensors. I replaced the battery & all is fine. Keep in mind this will 'zero out' your odometer and circumference settings too.
