I am just beginning to research power meters and will likely purchase one soon. Is the Power Tap Pro compatible with Campy 10 speed? From what I can gather, it looks as if it is being designed or has recently been introduced to the market. Does anyone know for sure?

The PowerTap SL is Campy compatible

Retails for $1200.00 for the hub

I use a PowerTap ('02) model that's Shimano hub and use a Wheels Manuf cassette to use it with my Campy 10 shifters. Works great.

In fact, so happens I'm selling my newly rebuilt PowerTap complete system with extra wiring harness for $375 if anyone's intersted. I'm about to put it on eBay.

I may be if you are interested in saving the listing fee and final transaction fee.

Send me a PM or email at elf6c AT yahoo DOT com (sorry for the spam thing).

That should be $1200.00 for the complete system with a hub (as opposed to the complete system with a built-up wheel, which costs more).

and there is a Campy adapter (and part number) mentioned in the manual. Don't know exactly what this is, though.

I've always used Wheels Mfg Campy cassettes on Shimano hubs for my bikes and intend to do the same for this. No problems so far--though I have 9 speed.

My experience with CycleOps is that their documentation is awful and their product knowledge is even worse. Make sure you check a few sources before you believe what they're telling you about compatibility, etc.

Anyone out there know the dif between the Pro and the SL? Seems like it's nothing but weight savings at a rather pricey $2/gram.

I'm using mine with a Shimano hub body and Wheels conversion cassettes running Campag 10, but then I run conversions on all my wheels. Works like a charm.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice, by the bye. I agree that one definitely does have to set up the receiver a little closer to the hub than they recommend if you're in an area with a lot of overhead power lines. Boulder is simply infested with them, as I discovered.

The only thing I wish they did was offer different length wiring harnesses. I'm sure you can only imagine what a wiring harness built to accomodate a 65cm frame, looks like on my 46cm compact

I think I recall reading that the Campag freehub body conversion kit runs around $100 direct from Graber. Snoop around on their website a bit, I did see it there.

the "Campy Adapter" is nothing more than an 11-23 Wheels Manuf conversion cassette. I got one from them 2 yrs ago when they had a deal with Wheels Manuf. before they started selling them at premium on their own. They charged me about $45 for it, but you'd be lucky to find one under $100 normally.

Relevent to this discussion: Today I completed my experiment with Shimano 9 cassette and hub shifted by Campy 10. As others on this board insisted, it works pretty darn well. Not perfectly, but plenty good enough. So, be it known, you don't really even HAVE to have a conversion cassette to run a Shimano 9 wheel with Campy 10 shifters. This is also valuable to know if you have neutral wheel support in a race and there are only Shimano 9 wheels. You will have to move your barrell adjuster to tune it to a middle sprocket and sometimes fine tune it a bit in the lower gears, but honestly I have to do that occasionally with my matching equipment too. The only down side is when you switch back to a Campy 10 cassette and wheel you will have to move your barrell adjuster again.

Had this same thread about a month ago. With 04 Record 10 I use the Wheels Mfg 12-25 cassette. Some barrel adjustments and good to go. Certainly not as smooth as using the campy cassete, but darn close. I can definitely feel the extra 1.25 lbs in the wheel and hub from my usual neutrons.

Do a search for the thread - I think it was Power Tap / Campy Compatibility

The new SL (available around Dec) will have the option of a Campy cassette body. Otherwise, the Pro is Shimano only so you have to use the Wheels Manufacturing cassette. Also, the American Classic cassette won't work on the PowerTap hub - which is okay since it works like crap anyway.

Just talked to Saris (parent of Cyclops):

The SL is a bit of a ways away right now, you cannot even order one yet. And they will not be taking EP's on them for a while. :( That is fair of course, but still a bit of a bummer.

The rep I talked with was a racer herself, and ran me through a few details.

The Pro cannot be converted to Campy due to the internals (Shimano 105) I believe. The conversion part is a Wheels manufacturing built cassette designed to work with the powertap. Given the good rep they have, and the attractive 11-25 ratio that was fine with me.

The SL is built on Hugi internals which allows for the swap of freehub bodies (yeah!) also it will be lighter which is cool for those wanting to race theirs.

Seeing that mine is for training, and I received very good customer service the last 3 calls I has with them, I decided to order a PT Pro system (32H with the Mavic Open Pro rim) and the conversion 11-25 cassette. It will be a bit before mine is delivered, but I can't wait to play with it.

I'm having Dave Thomas build my new Pro hub into a wheel. It seems that the $140 he's charging was fairly attractive even against the pro deal price at CycleOps (can't remember exactly since someone else handled it for me.)

Another benefit: Dave seemed to know a lot more about their hubs than they do.

To CycleOps credit, though, they told us 6 weeks on delivery and got it to us in about 3.

Dave said he'd get my wheel in the mail today. Getting kinda excited...

Thanks, that's great information.

I could have got the hub and had my shop build the wheel up lighter with DT Revolutions or another lighter spoke (or at least got the carbon rim option), but as this wheel is just for training that wasn't a huge priority right now. If it was I would have waited for the spiffy new SL version of the Hub.

As for the phone reps, they do seem to vary a bit, but the one I got yesterday was great. Jesse who watches the Topica wattage forum is also very highly regarded. Additionally they treated me fairly on a older Cyclops Fliud Trainer made prior to them (graber/saris) purchasing the company's assets even though they really did not have to.

So I am going to give them a whirl and see what happens.

:)
