Guys, im planning to host my own little training camp, since i cant afford the real ones, and trying to find a place to train in during the winter, im thinking about doing a 1 week training camp to get some base training in, i live in the east coast so its freezing during the Jan. Feb. months, can u recommend any west coast states or south west coast states that has some sweet roads, and nice climbs?

lot cheaper probably to go to FL if you are on the East Coast, but I LOVE riding in my home town of San Diego

Death Valley CA would probably be pretty sweet during that time of the year. Plenty of huge climbs there.

Everybody goes to Tucson.

Both islands are bicycle friendly and have nice bike lanes on many of the roads.

On Maui you can climb from sealevel to 10,023 feet in less than 40 miles on paved roads. On Hawaii you can climb from sealevel to 13,000+ feet, the last 6,000 feet are packed gravel and dirt roads.

I would not call either of the climbs "base training" unless your name is Lance or Mayo.

Search the archives. I think there was a thread just like this a couple of months ago. Consensus seemed to be Tucson or Flagstaff, IIRC.

There was thread last month anywhere in mid to southern CA or Arizona would be decent not real cold and not real rainy.

flagstaff is at 7000 ft, and would be quite chilly/snowy in winter. usually snows into april.

I don't know, but after going for a ride in the rain, in feb. out in the berkshires and lapsing into hypothermia on a descent, i was ready for anything that was thrown at me. So i'd say stay in new england. Get some booties though, i once had to soak my feet in cold water to get them warmed back up, and try and figure out a way to keep your bottles from freezing. I haven't yet:)

how about someplace like South Carolina? Hincapie trains there...probably too cold though and not much of a cycling scene other than where hincapie's from (greenville?)

Generally, Dec Jan and Feb are pretty darn nice in Tucson. Lots of blue sky and warm daytime temps and many miles of roads. But...I have experienced more than one cold spell there over the years - moisture from Pacific meets with cold air sinking from the northern Rockies. The Catalina Mtns that rise on the northside of Tucson get snow regularly on elevations above 7500 ft.

hawaii is in the 70s/80s all year, and is beautiful. go there.

Scottsdale or Fountain Hills isn't too bad in winter months.
