View Full Version : Taking a whizz while on the bike
filly 10-01-2004, 06:58 AM Allright, what are your tips? I find that no matter what, I've got to take care of business around mile 25 or 30 of any ride. Well, until now, I've always stopped on the side of the road, but this obviously isn't practical as I'm moving up from cat 5 to 4 where races can be 70 miles long. I've got to learn how to do it on the fly. I wear shorts, not bibs, so I assume it should be easier, but I still don't think I can accomplish this feat without major foul-ups. How do you do it? Kick your knee out and aim under your leg, or straighten your leg and aim over the top? Either way, I want to avoid dousing myself.

First of all, despite your screen name, I assume that you are a male and these are instructions to that end:
Bibs or not doesn't matter - roll up right leg on your shorts (left side if you are in England/Australia/Japan/Former British Colony). Get off of your saddle with your right leg down. Pull your unit out and position it so that pee in front of your leg to the outside of your foot. When the stream winds down, you'll get a couple of drops so don't worry about it.
You have to do this on a downhill or someone pushing you. Do not ask someone to push you on a flase flat as they will never agree to do the favour again.

why did you post to both racing and general? is peeing on the bike really all that big of a deal or are you trolling? just pull over and take a whiz unless you are racing for big money. if you have to pee every 20 miles maybe you're drinking too much.
filly 10-01-2004, 07:38 AM Yeah it's a big deal, dude. Even in non-races, with the MS tour coming up, the lead pack (you usually know who these guys are already) has decided that they're not stopping at all for the entire 75 miles. When I asked about taking a piss, they said I need to learn how to do it on the bike. If not, I'll have to stop and obviously won't catch back up.

You gotta be kidding!@ People on the MS tour are worried about stopping to piss? Maybe you are riding with the wrong people.

Folks this is very very easy. First, get a grip if you actually have a problem with this in a charity ride.
Marathoners in Ultra events (50+ miles) just whip it out and pee while running. Thats a funny thing for sure.
As far as what to do, follow the divers example: If its cold, piss away and enjoy the warmth of that urine running down your leg. Otherwise, hey, the wind feels cool on the legs while you ride. IF you are hydrating properly, this should not be an issue as you are sweating out what you put in.....
NOW, if we are talking about taking a dump, then we need to talk....
MR_GRUMPY 10-01-2004, 08:54 AM You need to either: Ride faster.......Drink less........Or see a doctor.
catboy 10-01-2004, 09:20 AM last year at the worlds in hamilton, i almost got peed on while standing at the curb trying to get a glimpse of the peloton flying by.
it was hilarious!
by the time i figured out what was going on, i was dodging the delayed arrival of the stream!
"...what the hell is...WHOA!"
ever since, i've wanted to try it, but i never seem to have to go...no matter how long the ride.
anyway, it's just a tour dude, pull over and pee. besides, you may actually piss people off (pun definitley intended) by not being discrete or private about it depending on where you are, who's around, etc.
i saw an official almost pull this dude out of a race befoe it even started for trying to pee while we were lined up waiting for the gun. if you're not a pro, it's just tacky and stupid.
VeloRainDog 10-01-2004, 12:17 PM In some races (especially longer ones) being able to pee while riding is key. As stated above, you either need a long, gentle downhill or someone to give you a push. Also, as stated above, the easiest way is to roll up your right short leg and pull it out. I've found that you don't even need to unclip from your pedal. Just stick your right knee straight out away from you and aim downward. The forward motion causes it all to go behind you and you shouldn't even get a drop on your bike, let alone yourself. I practiced this a few times out on long training rides and when it came time to use it in a race, it worked like a charm.

I've never been able to do it while sitting. That's why I stand and lean over when I do it. Of course you cannot unclip because you would fall but I don't know what you'd want to unclip anyway.

I forgot to mention, that yes, you do need to stand up.
jjspike 10-01-2004, 12:29 PM If was told the big-boys use a catheter which ties into an "evaporation field" somewhere on their shorts or back. Is this true?

Yes. In the Twilight Zone.
In case the sarcasm doesn't come through that means absolutely not. It's not true.

BIG Boys just flop it over there shoulder and let it fly. Gives a whole new meaning to wheel sucker.
CLTracer 10-04-2004, 10:16 AM I've only had to take a leak twice during races and I race Pro/1/2 events where the road races are usually 100+ miles. If you piss right before the start of your race and twenty miles in you have to go that bad, you are overhydrating or drinking waay too much coffee. Or, you have a medical condition.
All that said, I can't do the "roll up the shorts" thing. I have to pull down the front of my bibs.

Hey now, watch it --- it might be short, but it sure is skinny.

LOL.
You're right about hardly eve having to do it. I think that I've only done it 6 or 7 times in races. There's no point in training or on a ride like the MS or a event century.
It's a little needed skill, unfortunately.
If someone is going to focus on learning something wierd but useable, learn to trackstand.
