View Full Version : If the Shoe Fits...
MisterMo 10-07-2004, 06:09 PM I ride the Index Galena Road (Western WA) almost daily. This past Sunday there was a club or group of some sort up there as well. We passed your group headed down. One of you flatted and left your tube as roadside garbage. On the off chance that the guilty party or a member of that group visits this board, please, If you are so inclined to be a slob and just chuck your trash by the roadside, then go ride elsewhere. You are most unwelcome up the Sky Valley.
MikeBiker 10-07-2004, 06:34 PM I do have to say that in general I see very little cycling generated trash alongside the roads. Occasionally I see a tube or CO2 cylinder. I see much more auto related trash such as fast food bags or soft drink/beer containers.

No doubt about it. The road in question has its fair share of such bubba trash. Why it should anger me more that a cyclist contributed to the problem I don't know, but it does.

That was me. Ok, I'll find another route. What street do you live on?

man, that was a bad response.
Gimme Shoulder 10-07-2004, 08:38 PM Roadside trash is probably the only thing about cycling that I really detest. The typical bottle, can, or fast food container is bad enough. But then there's the occasional TV, high chair, toys, even furniture, not to mention auto tires, all obviously dumped roadside. But I feel an extra little stab every time I see a tube or CO2 cartridge.
Please everybody, if you carried it out, carry it back. And thanks for encouraging those you ride with to do the same.
Crankist 10-08-2004, 12:13 AM man, that was a bad response.
Perhaps.
Trailside tubes trouble me too.
But what I've done about it is to pick them up and throw them away. Then I move on. I've never thought to post a thread with a catch-all cliche as a subject line to lure hundreds of readers into my personal miniature vendetta against person or persons unknown in my fight against litter, on the "off chance" that I could shame him publicly.
And as to whom is unwelcome to ride in his valley - well it just gets sillier.
man, that was a bad response.
It made me grin.
MR_GRUMPY 10-08-2004, 05:03 AM Get over it....It's not as if the guy was putting up "Bush for President" signs on trees, or something as bad as that.
Yes, the guy was being a slob, and should have carried it along, but did you pick it up ??????
haiku d'etat 10-08-2004, 05:06 AM ditto. DID you pick it up?
I know sometimes we see people do things that really piss us off but I have found that it is better to let them go. It kind of makes you the better person for doing it. So just take a couple of minutes to cool off and realize that this guy isn’t going to be the first or last to do this. (The guy probably wasted a totally patchable tube anyways and is going to have to buy another one later. And isn’t wasting money the ultimate payback)

I'll take one tube as litter (they are biodegradeable, at least) any day over inhaling the exhaust of... how many vehicles? Lighten up a bit, Dudley DoRight- of all the indignities that cycling exposes us to, does this one really rank that highly in your book? There must be no motorized vehicles anywhere near where you ride to be this worked up... you must live in a cycling paradise for a tube to warrant such bile. I'm green with envy.
MisterMo 10-08-2004, 06:07 AM In response to various posts:
Yes, I did pick it up.
No, It was not repairable.
Yes, I am over it.
Yes I believe people who leave trash along the road need to hear about it if possible.
Yes I believe those people should be ashamed of themselves.
No, I don't believe my thread title was excessively trite: If you're the one my message is for you; if not ignore it and drive on.
No, people who dump stuff aren't welcome here. I'd hope that was true anywhere.
Yes, I will chill out and go away now.
haiku d'etat 10-08-2004, 06:21 AM good on ya! :D
Kerry Irons 10-08-2004, 06:31 AM I'm amazed at the number of people (cyclists included) who "just don't realize" that littering is an issue. A great question to ask yourself if it's OK is the universal "What would it be like if everyone did it?" Clearly, the world would suck. Don't do it, and be ashamed of yourself if you do.
Toothpick 10-08-2004, 08:08 AM packet back in your jersey pocket or from wherever you got it.
Fogdweller 10-08-2004, 01:08 PM I hope that person does hang out here and realizes their mistake. I hope others who leave their trash around realize it offends people. I hope some of them will stop leaving their trash around. I also think it's a shame that some of you have to bash him for this thread.
