View Full Version : No Replaceable Derailleur Hanger C-50?

This seems utterly stupid to me. I was looking at friends Colnago C-50, and I noticed it wasn't replaceable  ?? That seems insane on a frame costing that much. All it takes is one mishap with a car or another rider and the frame is toast (for a while anyway). Anyone have any idea (it seems it can't be cost cutting on this frame) why??

When I bought a new frame this year that was one of the factors that put me off a lot of makes (for instance the top end Pinarello's did not appear to have replaceable hangers).

At a recent show I was admiring the Merckx frames then noticed the lack of replaceable hangers on the Premium/Team SC etc.The guy on the stand did tell me however that if you damage the hanger on a Merckx frame you can send it back to the factory to be replaced for minimal cost.

Still screwy. Not sure where you send it back, but I imagine it's more has to be at least 1-2 weeks minimum to get your bike back, plus the cost of the repair. A hangar costs little to replace, and can be done in a few minutes. Plus, a replaceable hangar can also be straightened with good results.

Until I bent my hangar on my LOOK frame, I had never really focused on how much of an issue/hassle this could be. Now I definitely look for a replaceable hangar. Within a span of a few weeks I bent mine as did my riding buddy. We've got some bad karma going here.

Someone makes a break-away derailleur mounting bolt that is supposed to break before the hanger is bent. Maybe someone has a link to the manufacturer.

I've owned many more frames without replaceable hangers (including two C-40s) than with and never bent one in over 20 years. My "lowside" slides always seem to occur on the left side. I do remember scratching a derailleur slightly, but only once.

My current LOOK KG 461 has a replaceable hanger. My KG 381's hanger, although removable (and fore/aft adjustable), looks stout enough that I'm not sure it would bend before damaging the frame.

They'll definitely bend. It all depends on how hard you hit/slide, but I managed to bend the hangar enough to cause the shifting to be erratic at best after a crash. The crash was definitely not hard enough to affect the frame. The frame was checked out and appears to be fine (obviously, one never knows).

I have looked at many Colnagos at the shops and they usually have the replaceable hangar. Normally bolted from the inside of the dropout plus if you have paint on yours then it may be hard to see. Many of the Aluminum Colnagos have the replaceable hangar. I do know older C40's didnt have the replaceable hangar but the newer ones do.

Derailleurs have hangers. Airplanes use hangars. Simple as that.

Went to the local shop today & looked closely. The rear derailler hanger is a replaceable unit.
