My wife would murderize me for spending that kind of money on another wheelset. She's none to happy about the $800 I spent on the SLs...

That's alot of money for a wheelset that is not even really light. Especially considering 90% of us would not take advantage of the "aero" quality, therefore providing lots of laugh time for people looking at you. Just get the K's, lighter and probably stronger.

I didn't say I was buying them. I just remembered some people on this forum were asking about them, as they were seen on some bikes in the 2004 TDF.

However, regarding the snippet of your quote, if you live in a flat area like I do, "lighter" doesn't mean crap

People here must be either very weak or don't know jack about these wheels.

I've been riding "old and heavy" Carbones this year and there definitely is a huge difference in comparing them to same weight standard bomb proof 32 spoke wheels. Carbones are stiff and, well, there's really no reason other than the fear of them failing and becoming a pricey training wheel for me not to be using them while training, and yes I've been training on them. And NOBODY has dropped me on hills here even though I ride Carbones and they have Ksyriums, WH-7800's or what ever.. then again the hills here are not mountains, so in this respect I don't know jack. ;)

They must be excellent wheels as I see MANY pros riding them in ALL kinds of conditions. . A friend of mine has a pair and uses them all the time. He says as soon as they are "spooled" up they haul a&s, and are bulletproof!

I saw them at the London Bicycle Show last month and a lot of riders were on them at the World's in Verona. This is a picture of the clincher model. Not sure what's massively different from the earlier version in terms of the rim/fairing part but no doubt, some one will.

Apologies to the original poster for veering off-topic a bit...

I think the Carbone style wheels we all saw in this year's Tour de France were a totally new wheel, all carbon tubular rim. What we see in these pictures and priced at $1100 appear to be more like the previous Carbones. I bought a clincher set in 1998, the rear wheel failed in 2003 and MAVIC replaced it at a price of $400. I now use them for time trials only, and as such I wish they were tubular or better still, disk in the back.

Agree Al, when the tubular model comes out it will be all carbon like a zipp, and probably under 1200g the pair,

Mavic debuted several new wheels during the Tour this year. Among them were full carbon and improved carbon/aluminum Carbone wheels, carbon rim Ksyriums, magnesium Ksyriums, and 5 spoke front time trial wheels (they're not track iO's as so many people incorrectly assume)

What actually makes it into production for the public is a different story though the all-carbon Carbone will be one of them.
