I am currently looking at a new road bike either a custom steel or a Lemond steel/carbon bike. The Lemond comes stock with the Veloce shifter and Centaur rear. The custom build I can choice anything, Ultegra, Veloce, Centaur. I have never owned a Campy bike, currently have one bike with full Ultegra another with 105. I have no problem with getting a Campy group I am just not sure how to compare Ultegra to Campy group wise as far as quality. If I go with Shimano the Ultegra 9 group would be my choice, the dealer told me Centaur is equal to Ultegra? Does the Veloce compare to the 105? I like to go with the Campy group to get 10 speeds right out the box.

It is generally accepted that Chorus = DA, Centaur = Ultegra, and Veloce = 105. That's about where they're priced and, within reason, the performance, finish, etc. are a match. Obviously there are differences, but this rough comparability exists.

Kerry covered the comparison accurately.

I can't imagine that you'll be disappointed with Campy. I switched in '95 and many bikes later, I have no regrets. Personally I'd pay a little more and get Centaur, or even a Centaur/Chorus mix (with at least Chorus ergo levers).

The shifters are the big difference. It takes more effort to operate Campy shifters, but they do loosen up after 500 miles or so. The good thing is that they are rebuildable and cheaper than STI levers.
