If you're following a Derny, you want that guy to be as LARGE as possible. It gives a better draft! :)

.....from the lovely lard @ss conversation, but i've got a question about the actual track riders. please enlighten me......why the 24" front wheels in combination with those huge head tubes? it's like they compensated for the potentially low front end by raising it way the heck up with that head tube. doesn't that just cancel out any potential advantage of a smaller front wheel?

You're proposing that the small front wheel is to let the rider get lower. In practice, this would only be the case for riders of VERY short stature, as otherwise a low position can be obtained with handlebar design and a short head tube. The small wheels on these bikes are all about getting as close to the derny as possible to maximize the draft. Head tube length is a result of getting the frame size right for a given rider. Also, there may be issues about how the smaller front wheel interacts with the roller on the back of the derny - not sure about that.

interesting. you're right, i was thinking of the smaller wheel in terms of acheiving an aero position. but those head tubes and high rise stems give those riders a very comfort-bike-ish riding position. looks like they're ready to go for a nice sunday ride in the park, not a track race. thanks for the input kerryirnons. learn something new everyday here.
