View Full Version : Cyclist Coefficient
Scot_Gore 11-03-2004, 02:14 PM Pierre's post about Cost per Mile got me to thinking about other comparitive metrics for a cyclist. I'm making this up, never heard of it before.
What's your Cyclist Coefficient ?
Miles per year Pushing Bike Pedals - over - Miles per year Pushing Gas Pedal
Mine's 4000 miles/12000 miles = .3333333
What's your Cyclist Coefficient ?
asterisk 11-03-2004, 06:27 PM Well let's see here...
bike 2900/ car 6000 = 0.48333...
Living only a few miles from work and school and commuting by bike helps mine out a lot... now I just need more recreation miles...
4bykn 11-04-2004, 02:56 AM Let's see. 4000 bike miles so far this year, and about 7000 truck miles: .571
Does it matter if about 1000 miles in the truck are bike related?
deadlegs 11-04-2004, 03:33 AM 5500 velo / 7500 auto = .7333333333333333333333333333333333~ (projected).
witcomb 11-04-2004, 03:43 AM I thought of this in September, I drove 850km and road 780km that month, 0.918. That is only that month, other months are much lower, I only remeber because it was so high.
Kerry Irons 11-04-2004, 03:43 AM I'm going to guess around 6 K car miles, 10 K bike miles, for a 1.6 index. If I combine my wife's driving and biking, our family coefficient is 16K bike miles and 10K car miles, for a steady 1.6.
bimini 11-04-2004, 05:13 AM I'm in sales so put about 30K a year on the car. I put about 8k a year on the bike.
So the coefficient is only 0.267
However, I spend about as much time on the bike as I do in the car.

Bill70J 11-04-2004, 05:45 AM EOY Projected:
3100 Cycling; 4100 Driving for a coefficient of 0.8
Next Year at Current Cycling Rate:
10,800 Cycling; 4100 Driving for a coefficient of 2.6
biknben 11-04-2004, 05:54 AM 2003:
8,000 bike miles; 18,000 car miles = .444
2004 (projected):
10,500 bike miles; 18,000 car miles = .583
I too do many weekend miles related to cycling. Those events, races, etc. take their toll.
mainframe 11-04-2004, 06:24 AM Projected 2004 bike miles = 7,000
Projected 2004 auto miles = 2500
Ratio = 2.8
Einstruzende 11-04-2004, 06:28 AM By end of year, 25000 car, 4000 bike. 0.16 coefficient. That's piss poor. I hate having a long commute to work.

Maybe hours in the saddle vs. hours in the car would be a better measure? Don't know. Regardless, by the measure proposed, mine's about 1 - ~4500-5000 miles each.

Would venture that miles in the car/truck to and from bike events should be counted less, how would be problematic
rough projection: 2200/12000 = .183 (too many long road trips into the sierras)

In June of the year 2000 we bought a mini van to carry the tandem and bikes. We just passed 30,000 miles on it. In the same time I figure Miss M and I have ridden at least 15,000 miles a year each (likely more but what the heck). So that would be 4 years times 2 riders times 15K miles each or 120,000 miles on the bikes vrs 30,000 miles on the car.
Or as you put it a cyclist coefficient of 4.
More or less.
shaq-d 11-04-2004, 06:45 PM wow..a stat i can excel in that's cycling related, lol. i don't have a car and drive family's car very rarely...
~5000kms cycling this yr
~500kms driving
that's a 10.0 coefficient..woohoo
sd
Cerddwyr 11-04-2004, 06:46 PM I don't own a car, so 2500/0=Error
Actually, I did use a rental car for about 150 total miles this year, so 16.667.
Gordon
271828 11-04-2004, 06:57 PM I don't own a car and I don't drive one either. So
(~5000mi bike so far) / (0mi car) = infinity
PdxMark 11-05-2004, 10:39 AM About 5500 bike miles
About 4000 car miles
1.375 ratio
Most car miles are on trips out of town...
gogogomoveit 11-05-2004, 01:04 PM 4000 bike miles/ ~4000 driving...comes out around 1.0
Regardless of how much i love riding, car is still a necessity. Can your bike haul a big-a$$ mattress home from home depot? this become even more of a problem when you wanna date a girl/lady who doesnt do cycling...
