I have a road hybrid with full xtr drivetrain. Triple crank and 9 speed. Will it work if I replace the xtr crank with a ulterga triple crank and bottom bracket? Will my present xtr shifter and front derailleur work with the ultegra triple crank? I need a little more high gearing. OR: Will switching ultegra rear derailleur to an xtr derailluer. Both 9 speed. Will the xtr RD work with the STI shifter? This is on a trek 5200 with triple crank? HELP me please<><

Yes, shifters will work, just switch out the crankset and add acouple of links if nec. I'm not sure about the need to replace the BB or the frnt. der.

Hmmmm. What's the distance between your rear dropouts? If it's 126mm, your bike probably has a 112mm bottom bracket spindle and I suspect you'll have either chain stay interference or chainline issues with the Ultegra crank. If it's 130mm, you will probably have a 116mm spindle. Ultegra cranks recommend a 118 spindle, so I'd guess that 116 will work.

The front derailleur may be OK as is. Shimano says not to mix and match road and mountain parts, but I've had good results using mountain shifters with road front derailleurs. Check how the arc of the derailleur cage fits with the new larger chainring. If you have to switch to a road front derailleur, the cable routing might be an issue. I'm told there is a gizmo available to reverse the pull direction for front derailleurs, but I've never seen one.
