I'm considering a used bike that has campy record 8 speed and wondering if I can convert the levers to 10 speed by simply changing some of the internals in the right shifter. I would ask my lbs to do it, if it can be done at a reasonable price. Is this possible? I seem to recall reading somewhere that some years of campy 8 or convertable but not others??? Thanks.

Branford Bike now says they can't convert the 8 speed levers to 10. Personally, I'd rather have any of the newer levers, even Veloce, because the newer ergo lever body has a much more comfortable shape.

The links above have good info on the conversion. The new rear hub or cassette body will be a major expense.

(unless the grouppo is worn out). I raced using 8 speed stuff the last couple of years and I rarely find it costs me any speed. The only thing is I do need to change the cassette depending on the race. I have a 12-21, 12-23 and a 12-25 and I pick the cassette to fit the course, 12-21 for a flat course. 12-23 for rolling hills and 12-25 for the big or long hills. I do all my training on the training wheels with a 12-23 and don't mess with changing it.

There are some great wheel and cassette bargins out there for new or lightly used campy 8 speed stuff. (you can buy a new record 8 speed cassette for less than $40, and a chain for less than $20)

However, I did just get a new racing frame. I moved my 8 speed stuff over for now, but this spring I will probably buy a new 10 speed group (I'm still debating Record, Chorus, Centuar or Veloce). The cheap me will probably win and I will end up with Centaur or Veloce unless I find a fantastic deal somewhere. Great deals on 10 speed stuff are very hard to find. I will keep my old bike set up with 8 speed and buy ebay 8 speed bargins for it as things wear out.

If the old group has a lot of wear and tear, you may as well get a whole new group. You can get a new Veloce 10 speed group for a little over $400 and a Centaur group for a little over $500 at www.totalcycling.com.
