The Walrus 02-04-2004, 07:09 PM This is a very seasonal board... True, but there's still a fairly strong amount of activity on the old 'cross board. I'll just think positively and assume that most of the 'crossers are cranky Luddites like me, who don't adapt well to change but will one day join us here. jnichols959 02-05-2004, 11:45 AM this board seems more functional to me and is more like other boards i visit. i hope the content migrates here because i for one like it better. atpjunkie 02-05-2004, 02:05 PM not a big fan of the new format. maybe it's just me but I liked the linear fashion of the old. oh well, better hop on board, no going back. Read only. We're stuck with this one now... Mike jnichols959 02-05-2004, 03:55 PM if you want to see all the messages in the order they're posted with most recent at the bottom (regardless of what part of the thread the message is a part of), you can change the "Display Modes" to Linear Mode and that's what you'll get. The default seems to be Hybrid Mode where the threads are shown in a scrollable frame at the top and all the the threads are shown below that. The weird thing about this mode is that unless the most recent post is always a response to the last part of the thread, the most recent post is never at the bottom of the page. is this what is bugging you? one thing i like about this type of forum software is that it keeps track of the threads you've read in such a way that you can log onto the forum from a different computer and still see what's new and what's been read by you. this happens both at the top level view of all threads and in the thread detail view (as long as you're using hybrid or threaded mode). blackhat 02-05-2004, 07:41 PM ack! change bad. on a seperate note, anyone know what brake pads I can use, besides avids, to replace the ones on my avid shorty's? I just wiped the extraneous snow off my ride and noticed the rear pads are looking pretty svelte in a bad way. The Walrus 02-06-2004, 12:33 PM Most people who change over to different pads seem to favor the salmon Kool Stops--I don't have any experience with 'em yet, and don't know about suitability in your climate. arctic hawk 02-06-2004, 01:55 PM this board seems more functional to me and is more like other boards i visit. i hope the content migrates here because i for one like it better. AJS 02-16-2004, 02:53 PM Well, I haven't been to the CX forum in a month or so, and I was surprised at the format change. But it's Ok - just a matter of getting used to. Yeah - CX in my neck o' the woods (upstate NY) is kinda not happening right now. Hell, it's the dead of winter! :( Won't be too long and things will start to pick up again.... arctic hawk 02-16-2004, 05:59 PM Yeah - CX in my neck o' the woods (upstate NY) is kinda not happening right now. Hell, it's the dead of winter! :( Won't be too long and things will start to pick up again.... I understand & share your pain. I'm north of NY state in La Belle Province of Quebec. I managed my last ride in the great outdoors between Christmas & New Year. Since then, tick-tock-tick-tock..... AJS 02-17-2004, 10:32 AM Howdy neighbor! Last time I rode was about a week ago when the temps got up to the mid 30's. I thought it was a heat wave! But you had to be careful for the icy spots that still remain. I hate winter... snwbdrhoon 02-17-2004, 11:41 AM rode a week ago. BRRRR.... then double pinch flatted. that was a cold walk out of the woods.... :) luckily the dog was there to keep me company. I just want to start back to regular commuting with my rig. I wouldn't want to go into the woods here. The snow is too deep here & covers up all these nasty little things that should generally be avoided. www-mtnpedaler-com 02-17-2004, 02:14 PM Winter in Northern California. atpjunkie 02-17-2004, 03:28 PM what's that? oh yea I have to wear long pants now. Southern Cal sucks...uh sort of. The Walrus 02-17-2004, 04:20 PM Hey, I figure we're entitled to compensation for having earthquakes and Schwarzenegger, right? atpjunkie 02-17-2004, 08:45 PM that's Schwarzen Renegger. that and the outrageous home prices www-mtnpedaler-com 02-17-2004, 09:22 PM Big sigh from all the guys up north. Be nice to feel your toes again huh guys? I suck. www-mtnpedaler-com 02-17-2004, 09:45 PM It's been raining here for 2 days and is supposed to continue for 3 more. But it's in the high 50s / low 60s. The pics are from Sept. (cx) and Nov. That was the first race of the Sacramento Series. That's my only rider last year David Yeater. The other pic is my favorite single track Sly Park. That's what's so cool about where I live. 30 minutes to my right are the Sierra Nevadas 9,000ft. 30 minutes to my left is the Sacramento Valley (sea level). It was cold as hell the day I rode Sly Park. Here's another pic on the same day. Like my ol' Daddy used to say,"Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see." atpjunkie 02-17-2004, 10:01 PM you have my condolences. I grew up in Sonoma, have rode in Davis and Sac (great bike routes) and my family who lives in NorCal (bay Area to Central valley) has been keeping me aware of the rain. You got as much today as we have all year, please send some our way as it's dry as hell and we need the water. It's supposed to arive tomorrow but the last 3 have somehow missed us.I have a series of Vintage Godzilla DVDs I want to watch with my wife (she likes them as well of all things) and I want to A) wake up early and rain ride B) clean and warm up C) Watch Godzilla with her and my daughter whilst eating grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup. call me weird but as a new dad this is the sort of thing I dream about www-mtnpedaler-com 02-17-2004, 10:49 PM It's good to get the little ones hooked on the vintage flicks early. I have 2 sons. One is 25 and lives in Sac. The other is 18 and lives at home. They'll still sit down and watch a little Young Frankenstein or some pre-gov Arnold with me. The wife too. Although she ain't to hip on Arnold. About a month ago I went out and bought a 36" Sony Wega. Paris Roubaix party is at my house. Nor Cal was a great place to grow up. arctic hawk 02-18-2004, 02:56 AM It's good to get the little ones hooked on the vintage flicks early. I have 2 sons. One is 25 and lives in Sac. Geat for the Super Bowl but I missed the half-time freak show, wasn't paying much attention. Down side of buyinng a big tv: bit heavily into the bike parts fund. arctic hawk 02-18-2004, 03:07 AM Winter in Northern California. That's a really beautiful shot. It would be great just to wake up every morning & cycle to work & play. I think I am jealous. The sun, the good weather, California girls [sigh],.... Then again, the Governator (however you spell that), Wacko Jacko, earthquakes.... I think the ultimate weird thing for me personally would be listening & watching Christmas stuff while wearing shorts outside. Being born, brought up, & living all my life in Montreal, Canada, there has to be snow on the ground for Christmas. www-mtnpedaler-com 02-18-2004, 06:22 AM Shoot I missed the whole Super Bowl. Not much of a ball fan. Basketball that's it. Anything with 2 wheels or 4, that's my sport. Although if Janet and Justin are dancing at the cross nationals I'm outta here. Almost had to get a 32" Wega. I couldn't find a cabinet that was big enough. The wife was going to make me downsize to get the cabinet she liked. Nooooooooo, a 32" is like a regular tv. I dodged the bullet by telling her see could watch "Gone with the Wind" in wide screen format with a 36". Whew that was close. It snows here in Shingle Springs every once in a while. About once a year we'll get a dusting or a couple of inches. Once it snowed pretty good here and the snow stayed for about a week. I found out I don't like living in the snow. atpjunkie 02-18-2004, 12:05 PM I've found that sand makes an excellent substitute. Nothing beats a early XMAs day or New Years Day surf. No crowds, just you and the Ocean and maybe a friend..... I got a 36" SONY last year.....get this my wife got it for my birthday....is that love? She even wakes up early with me for the live telecasts of euro bike races. She can name and pick out the TdF five club and passes bottles in races, I just have to get her to want to ride cx. Your wife sounds a lot like mine, pretty cool. I guess my marriage worked out, we'll have been married 23 years in May. dreww 02-18-2004, 05:49 PM Watch Godzilla with her and my daughter whilst eating grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup. call me weird but as a new dad this is the sort of thing I dream about living in a f'in cold climate my outdoor riding is obviously taking a hit, so my thing now is to rise @ 5:00AM ride for 1hr 20 mins no more no less, as my 13 month old son awakes at 6:29 every morning, gives me enough time to shower quickly warm his bottle and take a quick nap with him as he drinks. Going away for a weeks training camp to South Carolina soon and this is the one thing I really am gonna miss! :-( Anyone ever seen a Litespeed tricycle on e-bay etc. Gotta have one one day and $800 bucks is kinda steep. Then hes gonna need a 'beater" trike for the winter rides right! www-mtnpedaler-com 02-18-2004, 10:05 PM That cracked me up. You're a good Dad. What kind of Training camp? dreww 02-19-2004, 04:24 AM That cracked me up. You're a good Dad. What kind of Training camp? Cheers, my local club coach is running a week in Table Rock State Park SC, supposedly fairly hilly terrain. Its an informal group ranging from Master B's to 1st Cats, so several groups each day doing tempo, intervals and hill repeats etc. Racing for us starts April 4th so not long now. Never been to a camp before except State (County in U.K) level performance programs when I was a junior, looking forward to it. I believe there are 2 spots available still, arriving Feb 29th depart March 8th cost $150 CDN + food etc. www-mtnpedaler-com 02-19-2004, 06:13 AM Road and mountain racing have started last weekend. A friend of mine raced with his new team last weekend. He was replaced on his old team. The guy that replaced him soloed off the front and looked like a sure bet for the win. My buddy (this guy's a freight train) pulled his new team's sprinter all the way up to the leader. He then put a block pass on the leader in the last turn allowing his sprinter to swoop around for the win. Justice! atpjunkie 02-19-2004, 09:49 PM congrats that's fan-freakin' tastic. I'll be in my 60's when we hit our 23 year anniv. I figured 40 was a pretty good age to settle down. www-mtnpedaler-com 02-20-2004, 11:59 AM I was almost 30 when I got married. My wife says I still haven't settled down though. Maybe this year when I turn 53,...naw I'm lyin'. atpjunkie 02-20-2004, 02:35 PM between Sac and Placerville right? HWY 50? near Folsom Lake right? wow.... I rowed in the Cal States mnay years back at Natoma. Used to fish the area for smallmouths when I was a kid. Still make trips to Redding for Salmon, Trout and or Steelhead. SS is in the foothills so you get a tiny respite from that summer valley heat correct? dreww 02-20-2004, 03:50 PM Still make trips to Redding for Salmon, Trout and or Steelhead. you fly fish? my first love even before CX almost 25 years ago, had lessons from Lefty Creigh (sp?) once, he is truly awesome can cast a whole WF#4 with his bare hands! I mean with no rod www-mtnpedaler-com 02-20-2004, 05:09 PM That's what they used to say about Shingle. It's a very tiny respite from the heat. I haven't fly fished for 10 years. My last trip was a magical 3 days in and around Happy Camp. Love to fish for the chromers. atpjunkie 02-23-2004, 12:19 PM yup. my dad wrote a book on it back in the 70's. 'Fly Fisherman's Companion and Streamside Guide'. Been doing it my whole life. My family kind of paralleled the one in "A River Runs Through It", my father was a teacher though not a preacher and I was the rebel child who could throw alot of line. My previous career (musician) took me around the US, Cananda and a few other countries and I was the black sheep professional musician. I'd use my off days fishing gold medal streams instead of nursing hangovers. Actually did a tiny bit of guiding as well, mostly for fun. Have fished most gold medal streams in the western US (and a ton of great undergound spots)and some in Cananda (BC).Have taken 20-24" Bows on size 22 flies. Now living in Sandy Eggo I have to mostly Salt Water Flyfish. I'll tell ya a 30" Halibut on an 8 weight is work! swank getting lessons from Lefty, what an honor. Ross Marigold (Idaho, Montana, Wyoming Great) inventor of the Serendipity and RAM flies was a friend of my dads, is kinda neat to get to brush up to a legend. atpjunkie 02-23-2004, 12:23 PM last trip was 2 y.a on lower Sac (between Redding and the Barge Hole) My pops and I took 3 Steelies on Fly and 8 or 9 on spin gear. not bad for 2 days work. All the rivers around Sac have been inproving, the Yuba is great now as is the Feather and American. I remember when chromer fishing was slim pickings on those streams. Took my first Steelie on the Trinity, had my heart broken (lost a 12-15 lber) on the Gualala. You guys still toss a line now and then? arctic hawk 02-23-2004, 01:32 PM last trip was 2 y.a on lower Sac (between Redding and the Barge Hole) My pops and I took 3 Steelies on Fly and 8 or 9 on spin gear. not bad for 2 days work. Though I am not a fly fisherman, I am an angler & will be out fishing this summer as well. It's bass, trout, & muskie up in my neck of the woods, so to speak. Of course, I am using a Shimano spinning reel, hmmm, this Shimano word seems to poke into my various hobbies. Since I live on the island of Montreal, I can chuck my fishing gear in my knapsack & cycle around the island until I feel I have a good spot to cast a line (& fall asleep) somewhere. For those who are familar, the small powerdam on the back river past Pie IX Blvd is a great spot & right off the bike path too. www-mtnpedaler-com 02-23-2004, 06:02 PM have been kicking it around for a couple of years. We haven't gone since they were little (now 18 and 25). We have enough spin gear for 10 people. I gave my 65 year old bamboo fly rod and reel to my best buddy. He's a fanatic, I'm not. The boys and I promised each other we'd go this year. Coolhand 02-24-2004, 07:30 AM Love the cross bike- makes a great winter training bike/ trainer rig. But road season is coming. Eek! Better go train some more! :( dreww 02-25-2004, 07:23 AM You guys still toss a line now and then? Havent done in years, my old man got me into it when I was about 3 or 4, gawd knows how he had the patience to takle a little un to the bank whose day fishing went something like: Arrive 7:01AM run up and down bank and frighten fish, repeatedly get told to stay still. 7:10AM bored, already tangled 3 times. 7:20AM eat sandwiches cake pop and any candy I can find, consider eating maggots but wisely reconsider. 7:40AM bug dad for more food, eat his sandwiches, chips etc. 8:10AM Attempt to "skim" stones across lake, annoying everyone in sight. 9:00AM truly bored, insist we pack up and go home. Amazingly he persevered until I finally caught something and well youre hooked then arent you! Got heavily into match fishing as a teenager, I doubt you are familiar with this, kinda like competitive bass but on land, no boats. Everyone pulls a mumber and stays in that spot for the 5 hour match and puts all fish into a large "keepnet" winner = largest weight. This'll make you laugh, I once placed 5th in a match on a canal one winter, total of 99 fish in 3 hours for a total weight of 15oz, this included 2 fish of 2-3oz a piece. Size 26 hooks and 8oz leader bloodworm for bait - ever tried hooking a bloodworm? Still get funny looks when I go Walleye (Pickeral) fishing with my old 13' rods and catch more than most (esier to control line when trotting on a river with longer rod) |
