I’m embarking on the first racing season with road races in the schedule. I’ve done plenty of MTB racing, but I’m new to the peloton. In the MTB racing I’ve generally accepted that I’m going to suffer after the race. I really can’t seem to drink enough water, and really push myself to the edge in a competitive situation. At the end just about every race that I put a real effort into I’ve ended up severely dehydrated. I’d drink quite a bit of water before the race hoping that would help, and it does, but not enough to keep dehydration away. In one 30mi race on a hot day I took down a camelback, two larger water bottles, and about 8oz at 2 water checkpoints every lap. And still found myself in the depths of heat stroke/dehydration. In another 24hr race I took down a camelback every lap and drank continuously during rest stops, and at the end of the race was dying. My pre-race carbloaded/superhydrated weight for that 24 was170lb, after that race I weighed in at 155-with a large pizza and a gallon of water in me my by the time I made it to the scale. Now as much as the migraine caliber headache that accompanies the dehydration sucks, I can deal with being ass-out for the rest of the day. But now I’m looking at doing 3 collegiate races in a weekend, Road-TTT-Crit, and I have to get this under control to be anything near competitive in all the races. I’m kinda anti supplement, and so haven’t messed with that kind of stuff. Any other riders who “can’t hold their water” found a system that works?
