View Full Version : Update on...Who, Who, are You?
Len J 12-09-2004, 02:55 PM It's been almost a year since J's famous thread.....I read it today and couldn't believe haw many people are no longer around.......so let's find out who is here now.
recommended format-
* real name, if you like Len
* where do you live? Eastern Shore of Maryland....Flat & Windy
* explanation of your handle D'uh
* explanation of your avatar The seat tube cluster on my Legend
* age (general or specific) 49 1/2 50's coming but I feel 25
* occupation Operating Partner for Private Equity firm
* favorite bike Serotta Ottrott
* what's in your stable? Ottrott, Legend, Lemond Buenos Aires, and Gunnar Street Dog Fixie. (Oh Yeah and a Sach's on order 50th birthday present to myself)
* fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 56, western Tennessee 1988 too fast for me
* how many miles ON THE ROAD on a road bike last year? 4,500 I can only ride on weekends....I travel 5 days/week
* picture of yourself or your ride? Don't really have one...I'll see what i can scan
* make up and answer at least one additional question. The most unusual things that I get from riding are creative ideas for short stories. About halfway thru a 3 to 4 hour ride, I don't know If I get delireous, but I start conceiving complex plots for short stories. Some of my best ideas have come thsi way....talk about the miles going by fast.
* what is the biggest lie you've ever told I'm really a 72 year old retired librarian from Wook, Iowa who has not been outside in 12 years (oh sorry, that was the lie...or was it?)
* and, something fun. Biking from Fairbanks to Anchorage with my oldest daughter....what a blast.

Stable:
My Allez, upgraded with FSA cranks, Aliante saddle, new bars, and stem.
My Carbon Fixe Ultegra, Open Pro, Suzue, Profile Design, fun.
Speed:
55.8 MPH down "The Beast" all hills here have a name and this one is a 1.5 mile long straight shot, only a slight turn, that is is small ring, can hit 60 in the big (don't ask why, part of our training we get ribbed if we shift to big ring early in training)
Miles:
2k since August, misc over summer
Can you do anything cool?
Well at first I could not, so I got a fixed gear bike and forced myself to learn how to do trackstands. I can now do them all day, standing, sitting, no handed, I can even do this cool move where I sit on the bike and go into a track stand without ever touching the bars :) It's my only claim to fame on my team :)
ITT this fall :)

Lie?
Plenty, funny one was my bike, I had been test riding bikes, oneday I could not resist so I bought my Allez Comp, GF had forbade it at that time so I had to leave it there a month while I "pretented" to slowly toss money at it haha.
Fun:
Funny bike story, on my first 70 mile ride the guys decide to beat me up a little bit, me+4 climbers and one guy a bit less of a climber than me. So we have this WICKED!!!! climb called horsemens camp. Well we climb it and take a left to extend our mileage even more. So we take the left, WHOA SWEET real deal switchback, awesome hill, WHOA WHOA WHOA, are you kidding me, BACK IN THE VALLEY. Here we are at the base of horsemens camp. Now the question, suffering I have been through, or new suffering. New suffering it was, MAN was I dead!

What's your biggest cycling related goal right now? I'd like to do a couple things in the next couple years. Finish the Mt. Washington Hill Climb and complete an Olympic length Triathlon. Long term I'd like to do the Ride Across America.

* After a big-mileage year last year, why haven't you been on the bike much this year? In spite of riding a 600k in May, the rest of my year has gone to sh*t. Let's just say I'm two days into being clean and sober (no, nothing illegal). Two days, and it's a whold different world. All of them are my favorite bikes - only one for each discipline though.
'03 Giant AC1, '03 Bianchi Reparto Corse SL Lite, Campy Centaur, 49 Schwinn w/springer
Fastest speed on the road? - 55 so far.
No miles on the road last year - picked up the road bike about 1 week ago. I'm hard at work though.
Why do I ride? It is the only thing in life that I have found to be constant. I have enjoyed riding bikes of all shapes and sizes for the last 28 years or so, and it has always been the one thing that I feel passionately about, regardless of finances, relationships, work, weather, etc... It is the one thing in life (other than people, of course) that I truly love.
The biggest lie I've told was big enough to never document anywhere, let alone a public forum. :)
Something fun? Heading out for a long weekend of riding.
And a pic of me riding - what? You don't really want to see me riding down the road do you? - That's more fun to do than to watch.

* how many miles ON THE ROAD on a road bike last year? 4,500
* make up and answer at least one additional question. What was your favorite bike from your past? Its a tie. I loved the 1990 Wicked Fat Chance I rode thorugh the '90's. For a few years I had a Zokes XC700 sus fork on it but when the seals blew, I went back to the original raked CroMo fork. I was retro grouch extrodinaire. I garaged it in Dec 12, 1999. I also loved my Schwinn Stingray I got when I turned eight. It provided me years of reliable transportation and thrills -- like seeing ho fast I could ride down a grassy hill and still jump off the bike.
* what is the biggest lie you've ever told Its not you, its me.
* and, something fun. I've been biking since the training wheels came off at age five. When I was a kid, my parents didn't give me rides around town, I rode my bike. When I was eleven, I got my first ten speed and began riding to nearby towns from my central CT home. One summer after high school, some friends and I did an unsupported tour of the eastern coast of the US and Canada. I remember on another trip, my friend Mark and I stopping at a hardware store to buy work gloves because it was snowing on us in August in Sudbury, ON. After college I got into mountain biking and rode pretty hard. After the birth of my first child, I went back to the road and became a big time commuter. Then I started racing cyclocross because I needed a challenge -- a reason to push myself just a little bit harder.[/QUOTE]

Hey, I know that spider!
I was fascinated, on a recent trip to Texas, to see how big and ugly their spiders are.
She (yes, that's the female, the male is much smaller) is the mascot for our trails in Jack Brooks Park. From April through September, she and thousands of her friends block the 6 miles of trails with their huge webs. They don't bite unless you mess with them, but they still creep me out a little.
The first rider of the day comes out with his helmet completely webbed over, and a few hitch hiking spiders on them or their bike.
You can claim to be a true trail gawd if you can clear out all the webs and not dab.

Each day, I spend as much time on this site as I do working. Don't tell my boss.
Hey Ben,
That's cool... I run my own business and try to justify to myself why I'm on RBR so much. When Anneli walks into the office and sees the RBR site up and running, she just shakes her head and says I surf too much, to which I boldly lie, "no honey, this is the first the time I've checked out RBR today..." "Yeah, right", she replies with usually a laugh. Good thing that I don't have a real boss looking over my shoulder. ;)

*fastest speed on a road bike? where? when
62 mph, on I-85 just outside of Lexington NC. Waited around at a gas station until a semi filled up and pulled out. Went after it and drafted. Great down hill section from the merge ramp. Hit 62mph then we started climbing a hill and I ran out of juice. The wind vortices nearly threw me off the road. The bike shook violently and I crossed two lanes of traffic before gaining control.
Never, never try that at home!

3,815

Q.So RacerX, what cycling record do you hold?
A.Well, I claim to have ridden the longest distance with a bat in my jersey. On a late, hot summer night ride, I had my jersey zipped way down. Something hit me on my chest, yuck, thought it was a big moth. Slapped at it and finished up my ride. Got home and took the jersey off to shower. That’s when I felt something in my jersey. Shook it out and there was the little sucker. Still get shivers to this very day.
*what is the biggest lie you've ever told
I used to use a fake Australian accent to get chicks. Hey, it works for Spirito…
* and, something fun.
A 1,400 mile ride around the state to promote the March of Dimes. 24 hours a day riding in 4 hour shifts for 7 days. The most fun on a bike ever. Met some awesome folks, saw some awesome views like charging up Black Mountain by the bus head lights behind us. Riding along the Outer Banks, bunny hopping mini-sand dunes blown onto the road surface and being in a pack of 4 at 30mph when a possum decides to end his life.
1c0n0cla5t 12-13-2004, 08:24 AM Hey, I know that spider!
I picked up a spider that looks very similar to this one (a Cane Spider - in Hawaii) while riding one day. I felt something crawling on my arm after having ridden, by accident, through a gigantic web like you just described. I looked down and saw a spider about 2/3 the size of a business card crawling up my arm - I went from about 15 mph to running down the trail screaming like a 6yo girl in about 1/2 second, fortunately nobody was there to witness it, I'd never have lived that down. :)

Dereck 01-31-2005, 10:31 AM * real name - Dereck
* I live? The best side of Washington DC - just outside of it!
* handle: My first name. I'm a writer, if I write anything, I'm putting my name on it.
* explanation of your avatar - haven't figured one out yet
* age: 55
* occupation: Writer
* favorite bike: The Bob Jackson I rode to my first cat license in 1973, my last racing season. Reynolds 531. Campag dropouts and mostly Campag Record stuff. Red, white headtube and seat-tube panels. 12 starts on her in '73, for 6 first six placings, then I quit and sold her. What would she be worth on EBay now>
* My stable: Gunnar Sport, Ultegra, getting a set of Ksyriums, colour-matching Fizik saddle - my usual ride. A Bianchi Pista ('cos I never, ever bought a whole fixed bike before and thought I ought to), Gunnar Rockhound hardtail (much underutilised), Bianchi Volpe with a screaming front brake, no matter what I do to it. A 1989 Holdsworth, still with DT shifters, but 9 speed now.
* fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? Regularly hit 34 MPH on a hill that passes where I live. At the bottom is the (in)famous "Old Angler Inn", where Newt Gingrich once failed to carefully read the prices on the wine list and ended up drinking a $3,000 bottle of wine.

* picture of yourself or your ride? Here's my beloved Gunnar - you might get me when I get down to where I look like I belong on it. Possibly the best all-round bike I've owned. The colour scheme is pretty close to unique - I know of another Gunnar nearly like it,and a similar (but not quite) Waterford. Hate cookie-cutter bikes that all look alike!
* make up and answer at least one additional question:
What would like to have been in life, given the choice? Answer: The guy who made Lance Armstrong the second rider to win six TdFs
* what is the biggest lie you've ever told: That's still a classified military secret.

Regards
