honestly i am in a deciding deadlock?another mountain bike? or a road bike? I have a trek 3500 mountain bike right now. at the time i bought it i didnt have alot of money so i bought the 3500 for tranportation. but I want a lighter bike and faster.I dont plan on trail riding or off roading or anything.I am 6 foot 175lbs and only have 600 smacks to spend.is this bike gonna be good for 5- 20 mile bike rides. basically across town riding if needed.I already know its alot lighter bike than my 3500 model trek.theres mostly roads here in florida so seems senseless to ride a mountain bike here.plus when i bought it I had no idea what i  wanted?still not sure thats why asking for advice here for trek 04" 1000.Is this gonna be a great bike to have?thanks

The 1000 will work fine for riding 5-20 miles around town. If you buy a used bike, though, you can get more bang-for-your-buck. For example,I bought a 97 Cannondale Caad 3 for $600 with mostly 105 and ultegra components, and it is considerably better than a trek 1000.

yeah I hear you thanks for the advise., I would rather get a new bike myself. Though since my last post I have found a specialized dealer. so I guess now which one would be the better buy? the specialized or trek? already did a test ride on the trek and the frame size i need.seems the specialized would be the better choice to me.unless there are other suggestions out there for a entry road bike?

I would suggest you go to your LBS and look for older model bikes, recently, went to my LBS with $1200 budget and i score a 03 Specialized Allez Comp 18 for $1155 plus tax, was almost $1750 plus tax, i was lucky that this was the only bike on sale and it was the right size. also my LBS have 2 yr unlimited tune-up for purchasing a new bike from them, Looking at older model would really save u tons of cash.

unless:
A) you know nothing about bikes
B) don't have a buddy who does know bikes
C) are just plain nose in the air about "used"

otherwise, you can get a great bike from someone who is trading up, (you're too tall to get one someone has outgrown) or from someone like me who got bikes just to try out different materials and now does not ride as much. I know many who have great aluminum and then want something softer as they get older or injured and their backs hurt.

if there is a velodrome near you that has a bike swap check that out.
personally, i like ebay--3 mtn and 5 road bikes: --all great.
good luck,
jim
