View Full Version : Help Me Please!!!!
Angelracer 12-14-2004, 06:52 AM Hey, Im a young biker, im 20, VT, male. I need help getting into racing. I have good potential for racing, yet funds and funds keep me back. I have an old bike, 1980's Fuji Ace which is old and falling apart, yet the suntor componets suprisingly hold together. I need a racing bike. I average about 22-24 mph, fastest sprint on a flat-55mph, fastest downhill-75mph. Ive been biking for years, but not racing becuase im poor and am in college in Vermont. Before winter strook i was only training about 3 days a week if I had the time, and was pushing those speeds easily. I hear from a bike shop owner in VT I could race about 26/27 on a new bike he suggested for me- Orbea Onix, I like it, but we'll see how soon I can get funds for that. If anyone knows anything about sponsorships or anything to help me please, Im hooked on biking. I need to race, or I will wither away.... When Im on my bike, its as if I am flying, I have wings. I feel so free spirited, nothing drives me insane biking. I do it to go fast becuase I feel as if I am flying. My goal is to get into the 30's mph avg. by the end of this summer. Trust me Im motivated. I wont let myself down. Any takers?

If you can sprint 55 mph, you shouldn't be asking us for help. Here's a quote from cyclingnews.com about this year's olympic games sprint qualification:
"Australia's Ryan Bayley followed the scorching trail set by his team-mate Anna Meares to set the fastest time in qualifying for the men's sprint this morning, recording a flying 200m of 10.177 seconds, for an average speed of 70.747km/h."
That's 200m in 10.177 seconds, or an average of 43.8 mph. He went on to win the gold medal in the olympics. If you can sprint as you say, try giving USA cycling a call, I'm sure they'd be happy to have gold medals at every world cup/world championship/olympics for the next 10 years.
On another note, you say your bike is falling apart, but the components are still holding together. What exactly is falling apart then? Are there giant holes in the frame?
Also, a new bike will not make you 3-4 mph faster, unless your old bike has a rusted chain, two flat tires, and you're buying a full TT setup.
Lastly, have you even tried racing before? If you had some results you could get on a local club/team, which would at least offer you a discount at the LBS or some similar program. If you go to UVM, even better, they have one of the best college teams on the east coast.

argylesocks 12-14-2004, 07:38 AM yeah...30mph ave shoulnt be a problem. start training though, because cat5 races typically have sprints upwards of 65mph on flats and can get up to about 85mph on the downhills.

Let me put it this way, this bike weighs about 30 pounds so wouldnt it make much a difference? And yes the bb is messed up the crank slips and the bike is too big for me to start with. I go to Norwich, we dont have a bike team here. Well see, I'll go independent for a while I guess.

Do what probably most of the rest of us did when we were in college. Instead of using your loans to eat, use them to purchase a bike. That's what I did, several times. I never really starved that much, and I had a sweet ride.
Also, look for possible part time jobs at bike shops. Most shops, even if you work part time, will get you a severe discount on bikes, gear, and anything else, you'll usually get things for cost.
Sprinting on the flat at 55mph? NO way in he** my friend. No way.
Averaging 30 MPH for a ride. Start tuning up for world championships in the TT.
Head on out some weekend, and enter a race. I think you'll quickly realize what's up. Racing ain't easy.

See the Norwich link above, join the USCF and get your 2005 racing license, start talking to local bike shops, get in touch with fairly local teams, get into sync with the local and regional racing community, ride what you have now and upgrade as and when you can.
Aim for the podium, don't crash, ride well. Ability and technical skills and race tactic knowledge will overcome many equipment limitations.
Cevan 12-14-2004, 09:16 AM Gee, that'll only win you most TT's worldwide. What a loser.
pavedroad 12-14-2004, 10:10 AM Maybe his speedometer isn't calibrated properly.
Angelracer 12-14-2004, 10:27 AM Thanks for the suggestions, I will take them up. I already am looking at several places that are going to offer me help, im just open for suggestions right now until this spring comes i will make my decision on a team and such. Thanks.

Good suggestion. I myself have raise thousands of dollars selling naked pics of myself in the internet. Along with the money, I receive many lucrative offers for in-person appearances. The going rate for a simple housecleaning while dressed in a little Dutch Boy outfit is $200.

Go ahead and talk crap. See how far you get, not too far because you aleady are at your low bottom. If you have a good suggestion, give me one thats what im looking for. If your going to say somthing stupid dont say anything at all. Morons.
