Hey all,

This past September during my first physical in 3 years, my doctor had asked me how I was feeling. I had told him that I was feeling fine for the most part. He seemed surprised and I had asked him why. He them told me that my Thyroid was not producing enough hormone and that I should have been feeling off or tired. He wanted to place me on Synthyroid at the time but changed his mind since I was feeling fine. He had also stated that he was worried about me losing more weight as I lost 30 pounds so far due to cycling. He asked me to perform more bloodwork in December and stated that he would perscribe the medication if the results were the same.

About 3 weeks following my visit, I stated feeling tired at various times of the day and had great difficulty getting out of bed. This whas been on and off since. I had bloodwork done on Monday and received a voicemessage tonight from the doctor telling me to come in for a follow-up. Looks like Synthyroid is in my future.

Question #1: Will the Synthroid allow me to perform better since I am lacking the natural hormone? I do feel that I should be performing better than I am since I sometimes feel "out-of-it" while riding.

Question #2: Will I lose more weight if I maintain my current level of training? I currently spend 5 hours per week on the trainer and hope to race in some Cat5 events in 2005. ITT's are of great interest to me as well. I am currently 162 pounds down from about 190 pounds in the spring.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

JJ

There's a big thread in the General board right now on the subject of Synthroid and thyroid function.

Hopefully you saw the other posts in the past week that I started with regard to Thyroid issues. There is some Synthroid feedback in both of those threads. Here's the links just in case you missed them.

The bottomline from what I've come to understand is that you have to get your dosage correct. After that you need to stay on top of things and make sure you get regular checks to see if your dosage needs to modified. Most everyone I have tlaked to said there is little to no impact on their lives when they have their dosing at the right level, but many complain of weight gain/loss, fatigue and other symptoms when they get out of whack dosage wise.

Apparently we both show up to work and log onto this board at roughly the same time. You always seem to be replying to these threads right around the same time as I do.
