View Full Version : Saddle Sore?
SCSkim83 12-15-2004, 05:15 AM Hey i was wondering if the following is a saddle sore:
I have like a lump the size of a pea, it is some what hard to the touch and it hurts when i squze it. It is located right in the taint area. The skin is a little red in the area, maby like a small zit. and then lump is right below the surface of this redness.
So is this a saddle sore? and any reccomendations?
Thanks!
argylesocks 12-15-2004, 05:27 AM yes, saddle sore.
ouch..they suck....
clean well, keep clean, dry well, keep dry.
do a search..lots of info.
some use chamois cream with some luck.
Dwayne Barry 12-15-2004, 06:23 AM Yes, that is a saddle sore. I find the pain is usually from the pressure the pus creates, if you can pop it, you'll get immediate relief. I find a mountain bike ride, or bouncing of a rough patch of road the easiest way to do this :) Or you can wait it out.
Either way, I've found hydrocortisone cream to work really well in speeding things up.
Whatever you do, dont do what happened to me.
I ignored my first bad saddle sore and it got badly infected. Next thing I know, I am in the shower after a nice ride and the soap hits that raw infected area. Several years later, if you go into that house in that very same bathroom, YOU CAN STILL HEAR ME SCREAMING.
DRY DRY DRY thats the watch word. Otherwise, wow, its real bad.
peterpen 12-15-2004, 07:08 AM when trying to pop one - you can end up causing much more discomfort, and messing with one too much can lead to bad infections. If it's quite large and feels ripe (ewww) use a hot compress to bring to a head, pop, and use an antiseptic creme.
I had some pretty awful problems with saddle sores. What helped:
1. minor adjustment to position (saddle too low, pelvis was tilted to one side.)
2. Assos Chamois creme - I just slap it on the affected area and skip the actual chamois. Or, if you're fancy-pants Lance, get your aging pop star girlfriend to rub it on for you. as seen on Only Lance Network!
3. Fizik Aliante saddle - massive improvement over a 2 yr. old Flite.
4. several different types of shorts so the pressure points sit on different types of padding.

I have had really good luck with tea tree oil in treating saddle sores. It cleared one I had up in about 2 days, and it was big and painful. Key to not getting them is as soon as you're done riding, don't hang around in your chamois, get that thing off of your taint ASAP. Repeat, do not hang around in your shorts. It's asking for some saddle sores to grow and fester, and it's just nasty. Post ride, clean the taint area with some baby wipes, or something of that nature. This will also keep the crud away.
For chamois cream, I've had really good luck with plain old Noxzema with a little tea tree oil mixed in and some other stuff (peppermint oil, eucalyptus).
One other thing. Someone mentioned popping it. Don't do this on purpose. It only promotes infection, and I know someone locally where I live that did this, and ended up getting such a severe infection, he is now paralyzed. I know this is an extreme case, but it can happen.
filly 12-15-2004, 08:16 AM Why do some get them and others never do? I've never had a saddle sore. And can any comments about you have to ride enough to get one. I ride plenty, but I've never had one. You guys have kinky arse hairs or something?

These saddle sores are infections. If you take some antibiotics it will go away with 2-3 days...but you need to see your doctor.
wooden legs 12-15-2004, 10:46 AM i had bad sores from 8 hrs+ a day in the saddle mon-fri, and then some on weekends, and what cleared it up really well for me was a pair of bibs / shorts with an elastic chamois. i got a good deal on the assos top o the line short, but that was a bit of an expenditure. i think demarchi and castelli have elastic chamois on their top tier models too. 120-150$ is well worth it to me to prevent red, painful, chaffed buttcrack.

An effective treatment for saddle sores that I've been using is a combination of Desenex (the athlete's foot cream) and Neosporin. Yes, I know it seems odd, but it's been pretty effective.

Bike fit, style, type of skin, type of shorts......there are a million things.
I've had my share...especially after a nice wet & muddy MTB race. Clean, clean, clean....
Popping them can be some of the worst pain there is. Just so.....piercing.

The Castelli Y Progetto did the trick for me. Especially any rides longer than 2hrs. Minimal pinching and squishing. Cortisone ointment is my savior.
I would also throw in with another who mentioned pelvic tilt to the right or left. Definitely creates a pressure point.

The gold standard treatment is Emgel, a 2% eurythromycin solution in a clear cream base. The cream also contains alcohol which kills surface bacteria and also drys the area out. There is a generic version of this which is cheaper but you still need a prescription.
Poor man's OTC substitute is acne cream like Neutrogena or similar, acts to dry the skin but no antibiotic properties.

Place a very warm-to hot pad of vinegar (the brown kind) and do this 2-3 times....this will bring the ss to a 'head' and you can take care of business...repeat this the next day (it will be tenderrrrrrrrr) but it should be gone after a few days....good enough to ride and not notice it...For prevention, try using Body Glide...it's excellent .
