View Full Version : Doritos?
pavedroad 12-20-2004, 06:31 PM A few weeks ago I had a great 10 or so days in a row of good not so easy riding . Usually I need to take a day off after being on the bike for over a week straight, but I noticed that I had a lot more energy than usual and was trying to figure out why. There was nothing I had really done differently...EXCEPT....I had bought a big bag of doritos from Costco that week and was compulsively (addictively?) eating them like a little piggy. Could DORITOS be a magic source of energy? Could their curiously cheesy formula be a biker's magic elixir? I think so! (...or maybe it was just that I was eating more, but anyway, more experiments to follow...damn those things taste good)
peterpen 12-20-2004, 08:00 PM It could've been the planets lined up just right, or... you might not be getting enough sodium in your regular diet. When I started riding longer distances on a regular basis I had to bump up my sodium intake.
Doritos are great, except for that orange dust that gets glued to your fingertips.

Try the guacamole doritos. Instead of orange dust, you get green, and they are even more tasty than the originals (IMHO).
MarkS 12-21-2004, 07:33 AM than eating a Clif Bar. Diet is important. Not overindulging in junk food is important. BUT, when I am in the later stages of a long, hard ride, there is nothing I want/need more than a bag of potato chips and a coke. A steady diet of Doritos probably is not good for you. But, when your salt levels are down and your body is screaming for calories, Doritos probably are a as good as anything for your needs.

Doug Sloan who posts here and is a ultra endurance cyclist swears by Cheetos. Dunno...I think any source of simple carbs like Doritos would work. Lays potato chips...Snickers bar, Coke...whatever.
efraer 12-21-2004, 08:59 AM Doritos just might be the magic potion for you - high in carbs and sodium can't be ALL bad, right? The nice thing about riding a lot is being able to indulge without the bulge. Now where did I put my beer?
fast klein 12-21-2004, 07:06 PM I find that a whole box of whole wheat triscuts are a good, healthy quencher to the junk food craving that I get occationally. They've got your sodium and they've got good, solid whole grain carbohidrates. I sometimes grab a mountain dew at the outpost store on one of my long rides. I get a huge caffiene buzz and simple carbs. After that I feel like Lance Armstrong on crack!
Jet Fuel 12-22-2004, 08:04 AM I am going to start eating Doritos today!
kenyonCycleist 12-22-2004, 02:35 PM i eat whatever i like....KFC, doritos, bags of candy, drink a few hundred cans of pop a month,,,and a bunch of healthy stuff too. eat like a champ then ride like one. hooyah!
Keith Kibler 12-29-2004, 08:37 AM Doritos give you bad breath and leave dust all over you, so not only do you feel guilty, their is evidence of your guilt for everyone else to see!
Seriously, I have done two IM's and in both of them I had stored in my special needs bag 1/2 way through the bike a can of sour cream and oinion pringles. Got some carbs, replenshed my salt and the can fit just right in one of my water bottle holders.
salt can be a good thing

Its not as funny as it sounds. Ryan Bayley, winner of two gold medals for Oz in the velodrome at Athens bragged that during his preparation he would regularly indulge in KFC.
