i'm in Toronto for the winter and would like to spend a few weekends riding on ice-free roads.

question: how far south from buffalo do i have to drive before i find clear (ie: no ice) roads to ride on? Which state should i aim for?

i'm looking to leave the office on friday after work, drive until i'm "there" and sleep at some motel. Ride long on saturday, ride slightly less-long on sunday and drive home sunday night such that i'm home before 1AM. i figure this gives me 7-8 hours of road time - call it 800km from Toronto.

thoughts?

thanks!

This is a good idea. It hasn't been that cold. I think you want to stay out of the mountains and head for the coast, maybe Chesapeake Bay area.

I'm from Toronto too so I'm going to watch this post

Well... as a fellow office-dweller put it "Quebec is the world champion in putting Salt on the roads"

As I have seen this morning, the roads in and around Montreal are pretty ok...no ice, no snow, no slush... but with all that salt it gets to you. My Trek looks like it's been doing Paris-Roubaix twice (and it's just salt-muck-water spray...) Yikes...

I'd figure if I want salt-free ice-free riding at this time of the year... Florida ?

:D

Hi! I just came back from Wilmington in North Carolina where I went to try out my new bike and had a great ride but I'm not sure if it's that nice all winter. Passing thru Virginia I think that if you ride around Chesapeake Bay in january, february or march you better be really dressed for warmth because it was pretty cold while I was there.

I think Florida is definitly warm enough in winter but depending on how warm your dressed you might be ok in South and North Carolina. Just make sure to pray for nice weather. In 5 days(2 days to travel, I'm so tired!) I had only 1 day of nice weather!

Anyway hope you read this, Have a great 2005 summer!
