I bought a NOS 1977 Raleigh Competition GS, Silver, 25.5" frame, db 531 tubes, forks, stays, no braze-ons. I want to build it up with an emphasis on functionality, simplicity, and beauty. No fixed gear or SS. I like gears and I need some low ones.

My butt insists that my black Brooks B-17 will go onto this bike and I've pretty much decided on downtube friction shifters and Aero brake levers to minimize ugly cables. I won't put on any parts that look good but don't perform great (such as 1977 Nuovo Record derailleur and Regina Oro freewheel). I'll use quality parts from any era, but would rather avoid ubiquitous Shimano 105 and Ultegra. Budget $700. How about some advice and opinions?

surely, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If it was me, I would look for old Shimano Dura Ace or original version Sun Tour Cyclone. Congratulations on your find (is it a Carlton frame?) and good luck.

Saw a NOS Suntour Superbe Pro brakeset on Ebay. If I could get those beauties without breakng the budget I'd have no problem with non-Aero.

Late 70's / early 80's Suntour drivetrain parts would have been a period-correct upgrade from Campy Gran Sport. For wide range gearing, go with a Cyclone GT rear. Frank Berto's favorite touring derailleur, and they'll shift a 34. The "BL-GT" was the same derailluer with a blue plastic insert on the outer parallelogram plate, and can often be cheaper than the Cyclone. Original "power ratchet" barcons or Rivendell Silver "Supermix" levers. Retro shifting goodness.

I sold the bike in 1994 for $120, with everything in near perfect condition. It makes me sick to think about it.
