I'm considering upgrading my 1998 Veloce 9spd to 10spd. I've studied Branfordbike's upgrade guides, but they claim that I need to replace chainrings, front shifter and rear derailler (and ofc ergopower, cog and chain).

Is this really necessary ?

My hope is to change only the right ergopower and maybe chainrings and jockey wheels.

Anybody has any experience with this ?

You certainly don't need to change the chainrings, the only difference is the big ring mounting tab is machined to move it .4mm clsoer to the little ring and it's not likely to cause a problem. The FD should work OK, but not perfectly. The RD will also not work perfectly, but it may work acceptably, depending on how picky you are.

The other question that comes to mind though is how many miles are on your 6 year old parts? If the parts are well worn, it might be wise to upgrade now. Veloce level parts are pretty cheap, particularly at Nashbar.

i have recently upgraded from 9 to 10 speed - ergos, rear mech, chain and cassette and works perfectly with 9 front mech. you will have to change your rear mech as the geometry's are different and theres no point spending any money at all if it still wont shift properly after spending some. as for chain rings - i dont know - i use TA rings and didnt change them and i certainly havent noticed any difference.
