will this really send a message? Sounds unlikey. Can someone present the economic argument for or against?

You've heard of this right? One of my pub mates just declined for tonight on account of it's not one damn dime day. A day when all the (somebodys) will not spend any money thereby 'sending a message'. (??)

I don't know what to tell him. Seems to me on any given day blue and red people spend the same amount in the aggregate, so on a day when (blue somebodys) don't spend, it will still look like any other day when the numbers are all in and crucnhed. Hence no message.

If I buy his beer for him, would that work?

If you bought items yesterday, then buy more tomorrow to make up for not buying anything today, there is no net difference.

Also, most people don't pay with cash anyway, and while daily receipts might dip by a fraction of a fraction of a percent if enough people participate, the money is actually transferred go-knows-when.

So you don't spend any money today. You'll spend it tomorrow. Big deal. No one will care. Do the bleeding hearts promoting this really think that someone will notice and say "Gee, we better start acting responsibly." No.

Nearly as stupid as the "don't buy gas today" urgings. Well, you'll just buy gas tomorrow, if you need it.

I think it is a pretty weak form of protest, since most people will just spend two dimes tomorrow. If someone decides never to purchase something at walmart (a worthy cause if there every was one) then this might make a difference, but deferring a purchase by a day won't bother anyone.

agree. i think a few well placed eggs thrown at the fancy caddy limo would be more to the point. probably get shot for doing it, but it would almost be worth it. ;) here is snopes take:

Chain mail is so bogus. I flame anyone who sends it to me. It's not so much the message they send that I detest so much, it's every other yahoos that uses the Reply to All button with some comment like, "Wow, this could really work" or "I'll do it!! We're united!". Senders usually get a nasty-gram from me with a tutorial on the BCC button and e-mail etiquette.

My favorite line from the Snope'ism:
"If the most effort one is willing to put into a cause is to do nothing, then one should expect to accomplish nothing in return. "

So a beer at the pub would count, but what about a bag of weed? ;)

You could always buy some heroin and help support terrorism! ;)
