Just wondering...who else would watch re-runs of the classics and tours broadcast by OLN in the years past if OLN ran them in winter? I would watch almost anything cycling including the Lance Chronicles if they were shown. Why wouldnt a network that runs re-broadcasts of fishing run re-runs of cycling?

I imagine it has to do about money.
I taped the last few years of the TDF and Giro. I dug out some old tapes of the '90 and '91 TDF. I have some tapes that go back to the late 80's.
Believe it or not, May will be here before you know it.

I'd be OK with rebroadcasts, or maybe just some hour long recap shows. How difficult can it be to do a little editing?
What I'd really like to see though is coverage of the World cup and Superprestige cyclocross races. It's been great to be able to pick up some stuff on the Internet to see some of this. I don't even mind very much that the entire coverage has non-English commentary. "Blah blah blah Sven Nys - Blah blah blah Bart Wellens ..." It's still fun to watch!

OLN didn't even cover the Vuelta this year. If covering one of the three grand tours isn't profitable for them, I seriously doubt that re-running even their more profitable cycling coverage is financially feasible for them.
Face it cycling is not a mainstream sport in U.S. Market conditions dictate what OLN shows, and there seems to be a lot more hunters and fisherman than cyclists.

I got the 2003 TDF 4 hour version for Christmas and it rocks. Just enough of the action to re-live it. Great for training inside.

There must be more bull riders than I previously thought.... The station is joke outside of July. It reminds me of when ESPN was new and filled the time with high school soccer and chess tournaments.

no, cycling isnt really a mainstream sport but we're only talking about a couple of hours of cycling re-runs per week. not the costs associated with a 3 week grand tour with live daily coverage.

I'm not arguing the finances of covering any event live versus re-runnning existing footage. Advertising dollars are what powers any TV channel (PBS excluded). Advertisers want to spend their money on shows that will be seen by the largest number of people possible. It seems to me Vuelta wasn't shown last year because OLN's viewership share for the Vuelta the previous year was too low for advertisers to want to spend their money for commercial space during the event.
The same story goes for cycling re-runs. There probably just is not enough of an audience for OLN to get enough advertising to make it worth their while to show it.
I'm all for more cycling coverage. We've been lucky the last few years that Lance has been around and gotten a lot more people intersted in the tour, and made it profitable for OLN to cover the tour live. Once he's gone, and someone that most people have never heard of wins the tour, coverage will probably get a lot worse. I wouldn't be surprise if the last couple few years where we got some spring classics and all three tours are the crest of the cycling on TV wave for quite a while.
