I am not one to make predictions.....but I can tell you this much: Axel Merckx will do nothing as usual...what is with him? He is worshipped by his fans, but has little or no victories to his name that I can remember....

He once was the Belgian National Champion and he won a stage in the Giro as I recall but it's been awhile. Obviously he's gained most of his notariety by being Eddy's son but Axel has always been a strong rider who's placed high in tough races. He's a solid professional and has earned the respect of his fellow riders. Not everyone can be a superstar.

Hey he's also like 6' 3". He's fantastic when you compare him with all the other beanpole riders in history.

Axel is a dependable pro with some good results. He is great in a breakaway and will work and work and work. He rides well on most terrain and is strong for most of the season. Not all pros can be stars. He fans like him because they can appreciate his lineage and his style. Look at the teems he's been on - not too shappy. Check :

Bronze metal at a hotly contested Olympics Games is nothing?

Screw Lance - who cares?

What I want to see is who's in line to take over Museeuw's spot as the "Lion of Flanders", or the top Classics specialist. Will it be Boonen, Magnus, van Petegem?

Boonen almost for sure, VP is almost toast, Magnus is the wrong nationality.

Yes I know MB isn't Flandrian/Belgian, but I'm talking if not a LoF then an overall Classics king would be interesting. That's why I said "or".

I just feel for the guy-Axel must have felt the entire weight of Belgium on his shoulders when he started out. Those are impossible shoes to fill! I think that he's a solid pro who is now comfortable in his career.

Speaking of cycling progeny, I believe the sons of Stephen Roche and Gilbert Duclos-LaSalle are both on the Cofidis team.

Don't hate on Lance!

I think that Boonen will be your new Classics boss. Leaving Postal was the best thing he ever did for his career...
